Washington dispatches report the first retroactive Distinguished Service Cross award under the WWI era system goes to Captain Henry L. Harris Jr. for bravery in the 1905 Philippine action near Peruka Utig’s Cotta, Jolo Island. Harris, then a Twenty-second Infantry lieutenant, entered the enemy stronghold under fire. He lived on Hawthorne Avenue, retired in 1909, returned to service in 1918, and was then in Newport News.

Nutley Battalion Dinner Delayed Muster Out At Vincent Church
Nutley Battalion of Infantry held a Thursday evening dinner in the basement of Vincent Church. The muster out order was not available from the governor, so the formal discharge could not occur. Asst Ad General of New Jersey and Captain Benjamin Hurd spoke, Sergeant Leon A. Carson received applause, the battalion band played, and the colors were presented to Captain Applegate. About 280 men attended. The battalion will meet Sunday at Elm Street at 2:30 in civilian clothes to join the welcome home celebration.

Mother charged with cruel act on seven year old
Florence Schmidt faced Recorder Jamous M Post charged by Chief Sutcliffe with holding her seven year old son Hugo near a hot stove to frighten him after he allegedly stole two cents.
