Police investigated two robberies reported this week. One targeted Allan Mecette at 68 Centre Street where a $150 item and a $75 suitcase were stolen through a ground-floor window eight feet high. A second theft at 143 Whitford Avenue involved a handyman suspected of taking two diamond rings and fleeing to Newark.
New York resident Mrs Laura Sedgewick Collins and Mrs Hiram P Jones chaired the musical section of the New Jersey State Federation of Woman's Clubs as guests of honor at the Friday Afternoon Club meeting held at Mrs Donald MacMillian's home. Thirty attendees enjoyed a program on American woman writers with readings and music, a luncheon followed, pink roses and cosmos decor graced the rooms, and Mrs Pratt hosted.
A man named Walser, of Paterson Avenue, cut his right leg with an axe while attempting to fell a tree in the rear yard of Washington E. The axe chipped bone and muscles. He received five stitches and was returned to his home for several weeks of recovery with N. Rodmann and a physician.
Nutley Local Council of the Boy Scouts names committees and outlines plans for campaigns and events. President Harry Bird appoints Field Day committees, a camping site panel, a publicity group, and an awards panel to honor top troops. He also establishes a Court of Honor with a formal judiciary and a Finance and Executive Committee lineup.
The Woman's Public School Auxiliary failed again to decide on consolidating with the Woman's Club at Park School and will put the question to a January vote. President Mrs. Gilbert R. Livingston argued consolidation could mobilize 200 to 300 members, while opponents feared loss of individuality. A request to the Board of Education to repeal a classroom visit limit and seating rearward for parent spectators was proposed, with plans for a December 5 meeting to review similar systems with data from Mrs. Dean Welch.
Energetic youths limited to pleasant Tuesday weather hike to Little Falls Great Notch and Upper Montclair with multiple participants and chaperones listed. Groups formed by destination include names such as Dorothy Scorso Robert Shaw Cora Townsend Arthur Carstens Alma Landsear Lawrence Caikipe among others and chaperones Miss Clara Scott Jonathan Force Miss Helen Lindstrom.
The Board of Education announces a lecture on global firefighting strategies and the most effective means of control. It follows Garrett P. Serviss's recent talk on Old Holland held last night.
Frederick Wheeler, noted baritone from St. Bartholomews New York, to sing at Grace Church tomorrow night. The program features male quartet proceasional hymns solos and anthems with Wheeler and Miss Van Wagenen in duets and multiple hymns listed across the service.
The Rein Brau brewery in Newark seeks to imitate the popularity of Little Hungary and other New York resorts by offering a German family friendly atmosphere. It is located on Commercial Street with a cabaret and dancing and plans to attract motorists by dedicated parking.
The Ramblers football team split results over the weekend at Summerfield Club, losing 12-0 to Cubenee Park and then defeating Nutley Junior 6-0 on Election Day afternoon. They are set to clash with Woodside A. Q. Yantacaw Reid next.
The fourth regular meeting of the Luncheon and Bridge Club was hosted by Mrs M L Lewis on Prospect Street. High score went to Mrs M B Hatch with several members in attendance, and the next gathering is set for Mrs M B Hatch’s home on Vreeland Avenue.
Howard Wolfert hosted a Hallowe'en party last Saturday evening at 111 Brookfield Avenue. Guests included Frances Barnes Elisabeth Barnes Dorothy Holt Benen Edwardes Gertrude Ken Brooklyn Mildred Wester Alan Shaw Wg Cartes and Serecia Resavilie among others as games and dancing filled the night.
Arrangements nearly complete for Grace Church Harvest Fair to be held November 11 and 22 at Town Hall. Committees and volunteers manage entertainment for children, booths, candy table, delicatessen, flower table, and Woolworth event prizes. An evening program includes orchestra music, dancing, and two one act plays. Tickets available at Prospect Street and Burnett Place entries.
Mr Merriwether McCampbell of Pittsburgh on a visit with his daughter Mrs Ralph W Lucas of Parks avenue. He works for the Pittsburgh Press and will be near New York for months writing a series on life in New York and its surroundings. He plans a feature on Essex County Park oysters.
The Park Theatre in Belleville has been leased by Nutley Amusement Company to Watson and Griffen who run the Alpha Theatre. The deal started November 1 and runs for three years with planned updates including Paramount Pictures showings twice weekly and front remodels and interior changes to add seats.
Thirteen year old Dorothy Walls fled her Passaic home to the Delawanna woods then hid in boys clothing. Local and New York police coordinated to arrest several youths. The girl now helps as material witness at Schermerhorn Street while others face abduction and white slavery charges.
Theo Horst aged 62 of 19 New Street Nutley fell dead of heart failure while descending stairs at his home Tuesday morning before breakfast. He had lived in Nutley fifty years, was born in New York, and came from Saddle River. Survived by sister Mrs Malvina Rutan of Belleville. Funeral Thursday at W R Stirratt’s parlors with Rev C J Hoyt. interment Franklin Reformed Church Cemetery.
The Field Club entertainment committee announces three winter assemblies on November 19 and December 31 for a fancy drama event and a January themed program. Arrangements are led by Mr and Mrs Edward A Dillon Mr and Mrs Harry S Carland Mrs Alfred V Seaman Jr Miss Louise Van Wagenen Guy J Edwards and William B Arnold.
Board of Commissioners meeting ran briefly. Ordinance for sidewalk curb and gutter on Mountainview Avenue advanced to third reading amid objections from Mrs. Alice B. Canningham. Coeyman Avenue assessments re-advertised for return on November 22. Assessors’ report for St. Mary’s Place confirmed, Melrose Street work laid over for three weeks.
The Improvement Society announces the final meeting of the season to be held next week. Members are urged to attend as the group reviews activities and plans for the upcoming period.
In a tight vote the town rejected a proposed garbage disposal system for the second time in its history. Ward results show narrow margins with the second ward and first ward delivering decisive counts against the plan while Natley favored Republican nominees.

Library notes list gifts received during the month from Miss Clair Taylor Mrs H Libby Mr Henry Meyer Mrs J H Hall Mrs A M Slaughter and William H Mackey. A Nutley Alcove added a resident authors section with The Barbizon Painters by Arthur Hoeber donated by Mrs Hoeber. Daily average circulation for the alcove was 136 versus 114 in October 1914.
The Misses Marjorie and Myra Longfelder hosted a Halloween party at the Preparatory School last Saturday evening. Guests included Mabel Hayden, Ruth Symonds, Gertrude Longfelder, and others from Natley Newark Hempstead Nutley Paterson and beyond.
A local charity ball has been fixed for January 14 at the arena. Organizers announce proceeds will support community projects and note tickets go on sale soon through the city club.
