First Airplane Mail Carrier Flies Philadelphia to Washington
Lieutenant Clark Edgerton, Nutley native and son of James A. Edgerton, piloted the first post office aerial mail run from Philadelphia to Washington. He studied at Princeton and trained at Ellington Field, Houston. The flight began after Lieutenant Torrey H. Webb left New York at 11 30, delivering the first air mail to Philadelphia. Edgerton landed in Washington at 2 50. The Passaic first letter bore three seven cent stamps and air route markings. Nutley has yet to receive a letter sent by air.
