A reader letter defends the Yantacaw Chemical Company and questions statements by Commissioner Cook. It notes a February special meeting at which eleven resignations left six members continuing, and argues the company has not responded to fire calls beyond regular duties.
The board abolished the driver position and created a Desk Sergeant role with higher pay, while claiming efficiency is maintained. Yantacan residents protest. two firemen were expelled for alleged neglect of duty, not fire duty, amid accusations of tampering and mismanagement, with conflicting testimony from the Town Electrician and Chief.
Six complaints from Mountainview Avenue Centre Street and Church Street residents noted water pipe freezes connected to street mains. Bills totaling 154.11 were sent for street department investigation to determine town responsibility. If the issue was street side the town will pay. if on private property, residents may be billed. Col H G Prout reported Arthur Hoeber Memorial commits will gift a library bookcase and Hoeber landscape painting to the library.
Local Red Cross sections began weekly dressings and first aid instruction this week. Mrs. Isaac B Hazelton chaired the dressings group with officers named and sessions planned Wednesdays 9 to 11 and 2 to 5, while men are urged to contribute funds for gauze and linen.
A small fire of unknown origin damaged Rev. Douglas Matthews's rectory at 204 Highfield Lane Thursday morning. Matthews discovered the flames shortly after 7 a.m. and notified fire headquarters. Chemical Engine Company responded. Damage described as slight.
Nutley Fen February 28 a group of firemen claim the town frightful mystery could be solved and offer a hundred dollars to anyone who uncovers the truth. They accuse the police of failing to find clues and urge authorities to reveal the hot air behind the rumors.
Letter to the editor from Nutley taxpayer Joseph Searle asks what defines a fire department and questions the meaning of public service and taxpayer accountability. He notes a reduction of their volunteer fire company from six members and cites a $6,000 town investment at Town Hall. He seeks a frank definition in response to recent Nutley and Newark reporting.
Eleven of seventeen members quit the Yantacan Chemical Engine Company after voting to sell the pool table and other furniture valued around 200 dollars. The move comes after the dismissal of Harry H. Stager and rests on pending court action to set aside the sale. Sixteen names appear in the unrest with seven new applicants noted by the Commissioners.
The night after a sale, a group including ex Mayor Blum and others met with the Commissioners and attorney Hull to seek court action to recover the furniture. Hull says the sale was illegal and two thirds vote on finances is required.
Congressman Edward W. Gray and ministers Rev Warren Giles and Rev A E Chenoweth will address the annual banquet of the Men's Association of Vincent Church on March 20 at East Orange and Nutley locations.
Miss Rose Bryant of New York will be soloist at Grace Church's special musical service tomorrow night She will duet with Mrs Henrietta Foster and Westcott will lead the choir in special numbers
Mr and Mrs Metcalf Hatch and Mr and Mrs Arthur Garr from Vree land avenue return from a three week Palm Beach stay. They visit Mr and Mrs William ae Lene felder of Highfield lane there.
The Board of Education announces a 71917-1918 operating budget of 97600, rising 12275 from last year. Most of the increase funds current expense and manual training for the Springgarden building near Bloomfield avenue. Additional costs include four teachers and janitorial service, plus higher teacher salaries per Superintendent Beachler. Miss Margaret Gurley resigns effective March 19, referred to the teachers’ committee.
The Social Service Bureau invites with an entertainment at the Field Club on Thursday evening March 8. M W Beemer of the New Jersey State Board of Tenement House Supervision will speak on Light in Darkness with moving pictures. Mrs D P Falconer will give a brief address on the bureau’s poverty relief efforts in Nutley.
Due to the Federation meeting in Orange the Educational section of the Woman's Club will not meet Monday. A lecture on The Prevention of Blindness by Dr Weidner of New York is set for March 13 at Park School auditorium.
The High School reports honors for the period with Ronald Kirk top in the school at 97 average, and Mary Nicolls second at 96. Other honorees include Beatrice Sel and John DeVries in fourth year, Elizabeth Barnes Dorothy Holt Constance Little Grace McGuiron-Dee in third year, Emily Blanchard Jennie Law Ethel Persch Marion Smith Frank Fitting Frank Grube Robert Hoyt Dudley Shepari in second year, and Madeline Atcheson Loris Kirk Gladys Merriam Antonette Mitchell Marjorie Perkins Henrietta Wood Edgar Carlough Joseph Ciccone Edwin Probert John Puckett Norman Sawyer in first year.
Two candidate slates are forming for the upcoming March 20 school district meeting. Retiring trustees John M. Sattler and Marion L. Lewis weigh running or stepping down amid debate over board energy and leadership. Several possible candidates named include Walter F. Ormsbee, Earl Stetson Crawford, Dr Horace Tantum, and Edward F. Duggan.
In Newark on Tuesday Vice Chancellor Stevens settled the final decree in the Chancery case Barr Bros Rudolph G Schanf and H Fred Banta against Alpheus Hopper Howard A Hopper and others. Complainants may sell at their own expense the premises at 102 Central avenue Newark and any excess in the undivided one fifth share of Alpheus Hopper to pay their judgment with costs including counsel fees.
The Woman's Club meeting is set for Monday March 12 at the Chestnut Street clubhouse. A new constitution will be ballots and may elect officers annually, with some officers to hold over. Acting president is Mrs. George B. Philhower.
Crystal Lodge and Knights of Pythias hosted a dual anniversary celebration Tuesday night with about 200 present. Speeches by A. W. Pingree and H. A. Heinrichs were featured portions of the program.
Police to begin Monday issuing summons to about 700 taxicab owners who have not yet obtained licenses. They will process the list alphabetically. roughly 300 licenses have already been secured.
