Nutley reports include caterpillar issues in Rahway, residents at summer locales, and sidewalk work on Avondale road. Shipped celery and tomatoes move to city markets while tramps draw concern in South Jersey. Public meetings, trips to St Louis, and Lake Hopatcong stays feature among the town’s summer activities and civic notes.
The Nutley Board of Health met in the Council Chambers on Wednesday evening. Most business was routine. The board discussed compelling Belleville Township to drain lands near the Nutley line. Belleville refused, prompting a reply that the Legislature did not authorize action. The board will seek another route to bring the issue to the State Board.
Under Freeholder John F. Clark of Nutley the Bridge Board begins replacing the Passaic River structure at Avondale Road foot. Essex and Hergen counties share the cost, aiming for a stronger bridge than the one crushed by last fall’s flood.
The State Board of Health extends the non spitting campaign to New Jersey steam railroad cars and reports Pennsylvania has installed signs reading Spitting prohibited. Dr Mitchell says the new law empowers enforcement and the board views this as progress while urging cities to ban spitting near people with pulmonary diseases.

Workmen under Mr. John Mutch began rebuilding the town hall, damaged by February fire. Plans changed but urgency drives progress with completion hoped before December. Ground floor to house post office and chemical engine rooms, second floor to hold town offices, third floor for assemblies, internal hose-drying tower moved inside, steam heating and new lavatories planned.
Mrs George Smith aged 81 died at her daughter's home after a brief illness from apoplexy. A longtime Nutley resident born in Saratoga Springs, she is survived by three sons and one daughter, including George Drake Smith and Francis W. Smith. Funeral held at the Vande Water residence yesterday at 3 PM with Rev. William Stuart officiating.
Mr. Ward of the Telephone Company spent the past week in Nutley boosting subscribers in the Prospect Heights district and anticipates nearly fifty phones in service after the Vreeland avenue conduit is finished.
The adjourned council session resembled committee work with limited action due to noisy Health Board area. A license transfer for James Ferraro to James Jiangerella was approved unanimously. Milton avenue grading was discussed but no action taken. Sheldon estate heirs offered to pay back taxes under Dr. Van Riper’s charge. Nutley Realty’s map proposal sought dedication and improvements on High street Hawthorne and Colonial Terrace. Road work estimated at 12000 with priority for Avondale River road and Passaic avenue. Assessor Whitfield to begin tax duplicate revisions four evenings weekly starting next Tuesday. Other appropriations reviewed, keeping the council busy late.
Chapter 125 of the laws of 1904 covers removing snow ice grass weeds and other obstructions from sidewalks gutters streets and highways. Governing bodies may enact ordinances to require removal with penalties up to five dollars per offense. If owners fail to comply officers may have the work done at owner expense and levy the cost as a first lien on the properties.
Two amendments to the game laws went into effect July 4. One sets goose duck swan waterfowl seasons from September 1 to April 30. The other bans possession or sale of bass under three inches, pink perch under twelve inches, trout under six inches, and pike or pickerel under twelve inches.
J Harry Hull of Nutley received a July 16 1904 letter from Alton B Parker thanking him for telegram praise. The exchange follows Hulls July 10 telegram praising Parkers backbone and brains, reflecting Nutleys early Parker support.
The article notes seven Senate seats up for election this year with last year six and next year eight. Counties to elect include Cumberland Atlantic Ocean Mercer Bergen Morris and Hudson with one safe Democrat in the group. Sixty assemblymen are to be elected with indications of forty two Republicans and eighteen Democrats. Sheriffs will be chosen in Bergen Cape May and Somerset. county clerks in Burlington Cumberland Middlesex Monmouth Salem and Union. and surrogates in Essex Gloucester Hunterdon Mercer and Warren. Local officers will be elected in most municipalities.
