Miss Marion Evelyn Starks of Boston Mass will entertain members of St Pauls Congregational Churchs Woman's Guild on Monday afternoon January 18 at two oclock with a miscellaneous program A silver collection will be taken.
Nutley branch officers report progress in outreach to men's groups to present the suffrage question. A large card party at Mrs Arthur Carrs on January 26 funds the campaign with speeches on New Jerseys suffrage path and a mass meeting in April led by Beatrice Forbes-Robertson Hale.
The Board of Health granted conditional licenses Wednesday night to several milk suppliers including Henry Steiniauf J Reillye Sons Robert Williams Anthony Andriviy James D Berdin Milk Co and Pairfield Dairy Co. The inspector noted most applicants did not meet the strict code requirements for mil ne handling. Licenses from ice dealers or scavengers will be acted on when received.
Commissioner Carr and Tax Collector Van Riper will address the Men’s Club of St Paul’s Congregational Church on Tuesday evening January 19 regarding local government affairs. The meeting at the church basement invites all men and will include questions from attendees.
The Woman's Club heard an outline of the Social Service Bureau's aims led by Mrs M T Morse head of the Bureau. The bureau seeks cooperative work and to place unemployed people rather than just distribute charity though the town poor department will handle related tasks. Officers will serve two to three hours daily. A committee from four local clubs will confer with other organizations. Rehearsals for a club play are underway and a Lincoln's birthday comedy will be staged at the club house. The political study section will reopen for the year's work soon.
Weather and quorum issues limited the Board of Trade meeting. The committee reported on a town tax rate investigation by the Municipal Research Bureau of New York, expected to cost at least 200. The aim was to review town affairs and suggest economies to lower the high tax rate, with further discussion to follow.
The Bank of Nuttley started a Christmas Club with over 700 participants and nearing 800 as the deadline nears. The plan saves a small weekly amount and pays a lump sum two weeks before Christmas for gifts or fixed charges such as life insurance and taxes. Two options exist with weekly cents or dollar deposits, the latter proving most popular according to cashier Joseph Scudder.
East Natley acts to guard traffic by closing Park avenue between abandoned pits. Commissioner Carr says he acted without Mayor Blum or Commissioner Lefferts consent and plans fencing around the pits. Lefferts questions Carr’s authority and says no final decision was reached. Carr vows to keep the street closed until a resolution is found, frost or not.
A Thursday night blaze at Washington and Park avenues caused about 3000 damage to James Giangarelli’s building. Fire crews from Ventacan Chemical Engine and Hose Co No 1 fought flames after a whistle in a factory across the street diverted the alarm, delaying response by roughly fifteen minutes. Neighbors helped save furniture and stock as the lower floor remained usable. The cause was believed to be an electrical fault. insurance covers the loss.
Bank of Nutley stockholders re elected the prior directors with the addition of John C. Eisele of Newark. The slate includes William J. Berg Louis E. Carman Thomas Clements Peter B. Fox Henry W. Geedrich James Th. Way Albert E. Kinne Henry Te Lefferts Thomas J. Q. Neil and Mr Eisele. Officers listed as President, Vice President, and cashier were named, with term to begin February first.
Sutter clocks a strong showing at the ASE meet with notable performances from local athletes, highlighting team effort and rising stars amid a competitive field.
The Elks plan their annual reception dance for Tuesday January 19 with favors for ladies special string music and two New York professionals to illustrate new steps between dances. Entertainment committee includes Wildey Kirkeby Chapman Blum Hartman O Neil Blackwell Young LeFevre Fendrich Guthrie Clark and Pratt.
George A. Willis formerly of Nutley died Wednesday at his home in Salem Massachusetts. He left Nutley about twenty years ago and became prominent in Massachusetts. Augustus W. Pingree of Brookfield Avenue attends the funeral. Willis is survived by his widow, formerly Miss Egnice Pingree, and a son George Willis of Salem.
The Board of Commissioners was invited to join a regional effort against 90 cent gas rates. Newark Paterson Passaic Jersey City officials signed a letter urging action while Nutley considers joining with Passaic Arlington Newark Garfield to navigate the Passaic River for large boats. The board approved extending a sewer lateral into the County Park, and granted Samuel permission to erect a sign in front of his Washington Avenue garage.
The Essex County WCTU sets an all day event at Vincent M E Church next Thursday January 21 with talks on women and legislation national prohibition suffrage and White Ribbon work. Mrs John Rk Paddock of Orange and Miss Esther Elsforth state president headlined the program with Mrs Emma Yourne Newark secretary and Mrs Joseph D Little presiding and welcoming delegates.
The Woman's Club Domestic Science class held a meeting on January 8 with Miss Stryker presenting on food values and a demonstration of nut and cheese dishes. The next meeting is set for January 22 to cover household tasks marketing and simple deserts.

Committee members listed include Mrs Brenk Bennett Mrs Alfred Icdaatl and Mrs J S Williams.
Mrs Alfred D Hahn and her mother Mrs Martin Rutan were feted at a farewell reception in Vincent Church hosted by the Ladies Aid Society. About seventy five members attended as toasts were given and gold friendship pins were presented to the honorees before the circle formed and sang Old Lang Syne.
Boxer Eddie Nugent braved a near drowning after breaking through ice near a bridge. He was swept under and managed to keep afloat, then crawled ashore with assistance as rescuers hauled him from the water.
Nutley Board of Commissioners hosted Belleville officials led by Clerk Qséar Kirkeby and Engineer Frank T. Shepard on Tuesday. After the session the group dined at a Belleville hotel, continuing a prior hospitality exchange with Nutley. Paul Newman announces barber shop services with fourteen years experience and chiropody by appointment.
