Grand Jury returns murder indictment against Adolph Bertchey for the December 29 Lakewood killing of bartender Jankowski. Bertchey pleads not guilty as his trial is set for February. Dennis Hines, New Haven officer shot last April, identifies Bertchey as the assailant and reports continued injuries.
The funeral of Luigi Ferrara aged 59 of Washington avenue was held Monday at St. Mary's Church with Rev. Francis A. Foy officiating. Survived by a widow and three sons, including James Ferrara who runs a hotel near the Big Tree. The procession moved through Centre street to Lyndhurst Passaic river area stopping at Chestnut, Passaic, and Avondale Bridge before burial in Lyndhurst Catholic Cemetery. A carriage line numbered thirty to forty, with several hundred attendees.
The Friday Afternoon Club met Friday Jan 8 at Mrs. Herbert Lewis home on Hillside avenue. Participants included Mrs. Jos C Gothwaite, Mrs. G E Curtis Wigs, Mrs. George Rea and Mrs. Albert B Meredith. Next meeting set for Jan 22 at Mrs. Horatio W St John’s Hawthorne avenue residence.
The Holy Name Society of St Mary’s Church Nuiley plans a Sunday observance with all diocesan Catholic Churches in Newark. A communion in a body will be followed by a reception into the society and a sermon by Rev Walsh D D. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will conclude the exercises.

The new Nutley Town Council held its first session under Mayor Lux with most members present. Key items included tax disputes and back tax adjustments, street and sidewalk issues, street lighting, road grades, garbage collection plans, and resignations from the Shade Tree Committee and Board of Health.
Library notes show the public school library at the park is open weekdays from 3 to 5 pm except Saturdays Sundays and holidays. December circulation reached 1442 with new penny day titles including Lewis Rand Johnstone Anne of Green Gables Montgomery Coast of Chance Chamberlain Trail of the Lonesome Pine Fox Two Gentlemen of Virginia Eggleston Shutt le Burnett. Miss Stewitts and Miss Proal lead Story Hour. Mrs William J Kingsley to speak on a Dutch Story Tuesday afternoon and display Holland souvenirs. Miss Pettee to discuss Young People of Japan on the 26th for older pupils.
Rev James A Fairley former pastor will preach at both morning and evening services at St Pauls Congregational Church. All former and present members urged to attend. Bible School at 345 am Young Peoples Society of Christian Service at 7 pm Mid week service Wednesday at 9 pm. Tennyson Literary Society held a UJS Night at Mr F Gowers Hillside Avenue residence with patriotic program of papers songs and recitations.
Mr Joseph D Little director of the young peoples choir at the Methodist Episcopal Church was presented a handsome sterling silver mounted silk umbrella by church members. Rev J Ogden Winder made the presentation and Mr Little expressed thanks.
