Town Council Hears Complaints On Water, Roads And Taxes

The regular meeting chaired by Wilson G. Kierstead reviewed complaints about water flow and sidewalk damage near the Franklin Avenue bridge, and a frozen water main claim was clarified as not frozen. Ordinances on Hillside Avenue were postponed to first reading. taxes and road repairs were discussed with actions placed on file or referred to committees. The town treasury received 1811 19, with bills totaling 326 approved for payment.

Merry Masqueraders at Fortnightly Club Washington Birthday Ball

The Fortnightly Club held its annual masquerade on Washingtons Birthday to a large audience from Nutley New Jersey Newark Montclair and other towns. Costumes were varied and creative with Prince Charming dancing with Sis Hopkins and Happy Hooligan with a Court Lady. Dancing continued late as revelers uncovered identities and a midnight collation was served before more dancing into the small hours.

Petition circulates to restore Newark Branch train 302

Copies circulated among Erie officials along the Newark Branch seek the return of train No. 302, once leaving West Nutley at 6 28 4 a.m. The petition asks former patrons to sign on the train or at the homes of L Grant Hawthorne Ave C W Lichtenstein Prospect St Hillman Lange Hawthorne Ave and Jacob Fitting Franklin Ave.

Town Council Abandons Hall Purchase Plan

At a special meeting on February 19 the Town Council decided to take no action on acquiring Town Hall to convert it into a municipal building. The council stated that in the future the town will buy land and erect a suitable building.

Clements and Archer Wed at St Pauls Church

Miss Viola Archer and Mr Wilbur Clements wed at St Pauls Congregational Church with only relatives present. The bride mourned a death in the family and the couple share a birthday wedding on the same day as Mr Clements' majority. They plan to live in Nutley after a Washington trip.

Board of Education Sets Budget and Town Hall Plan

The Board of Education meets to approve a direct to the people annual appropriation and forms a Budget Committee to decide maintenance funds. A Town Hall rebuild plan includes post office on first floor and council offices on second while adding a public hall and training space. Enrollment rises to 834 with 107 off roll due to water pipes freezes and illness. weekly flag pledge observed.

Losses Adjusted After Town Hall Fire

The Board of Education will receive nearly $2600 for damage to building furniture stored in the attic. The Council Chamber furniture damage is settled at $150. Yaata daw Engine Company will be paid costs to restore its room contents to prefire condition.

Nutley Aims to Abolish Avondale Crossing in County Push

Nutley residents support John F. Clark as he introduces a resolution in the Essex County Board of Chosen Freeholders to abolish the Erie crossing at Washington avenue. The measure, referred to the Roads and Assessments Committee, follows Clark’s track record of town improvements and his pledge to remove the Avondale crossing soon.
