A mass meeting in Nutley Town Hall discusses a proposed park and memorial projects. About a dozen committees seek information on how other towns fund community houses and clubs. Nutley aims for a $160000 build with drives to unite residents as a memorial effort echoes nearby towns.
State official Kesdall called on local superintendents to document high school war activities. He outlined two models for upperclass involvement and suggested Nutley schools contributed to a broader wartime effort through student leadership in service and cabinet-like organization.
The Patriotic Fund will start issuing honorary discharges for contributors next week. Many donors have paid all pledges through January and await discharge forms. About 2 500 letters were mailed to members, noting status and delinquent amounts, with errors to be corrected by contacting Miss Eccles. Battalion work continues to locate December delinquents, with final canvassing planned for next month.
Two lawsuits filed over the recent garage blaze at Nutley Garage and the Wash Garage next door. Chief Wright Sutcliffe sues for the loss of a Chevrolet owned by his son Walter Sutcliffe, uninsured. Joseph Becker of Washington Garage sues claiming negligence caused the fire.
The Cleff Club, a well known colored jazz band, will headline the Vincent Church Men's Club meeting Monday night. They will perform songs and instrumental numbers with athletic events and supper. The club invites members of other local men's clubs and the public to attend.
Mrs. Albert F. Jackson hosts the Friday Afternoon Club luncheon on the 14th to mark the fifteenth anniversary. All former members are invited to attend.
The local theater now under Mrs L H Webbe Newark will reopen today with daily showings and a feature film each day. Two new proscenium seats have been installed, reducing wait times, and the interior and front have been redecorated and painted.
The week's sales of W. S. 5 in the school district totaled $155.31 with Park $69.00 Washington $88. Yantacaw $1.87 and Spring $10.56.
Miss Anna F. Seibert daughter of Mr and Mrs A F Seibert 116 Walnut Street and John B Compton of Belleville formerly Scranton Pa were married January 27 in Scranton where they spent their honeymoon. Mrs Seibert remains in Scranton.
The Elks Lodge hosted its first postwar dance with 125 attendees at Masonic Hall on Thursday night. A colored orchestra performed and supper followed midnight. carnations were given as favors, and organizers included Clarence B. Iliffe, Paul A. Rigo, and Edward H. Yerg.
The Charity Ball at Town Hall on February 14th is set to be social and financially successful with the patrons list growing. The committee must receive all patron names by Wednesday, and special features arranged by Mr. J. C. Bolger promise added appeal.
The Essex County District No 11 Labor Board seeks placements for men returning from Army and Navy service. They report a shortage of women for domestic and factory work and call for stenographers and office machine operators. The office aims to match veterans with openings in Nutley Millburn Verona Short Hills Caldwell Kearny Fells Glen Ridge and nearby areas.
Returning soldiers seek work through the town Employment Committee list with H W St John G A Hill N C Lindstrom Phillip Jannarone J T O Neil F B Carland. Major Michael Kelly 65th Infantry of 20 Lake Street is named among this week’s DSC recipients after rising from captain in the National Guard to major in France.
Citizens returning from Army Navy or other service are urged to report to Simon Blum Town Clerk for enrollment. The request comes from the United States government to complete service records from all towns and cities nationwide.
Miss Joanna McEligot of 220 Hillside Avenue was knocked down on Main Avenue Passaic by a motorist Samuel Frumin of 69 Main Avenue. She was taken unconscious to St Marys Hospital and returned home Wednesday night. She had been visiting her brother Private Patrick McEligot at Camp Merritt. He recently returned from overseas and is in the 310th Infantry. He served abroad eight weeks after suffering shell shock from an explosion.
Allyn Vroom of Queens town Ireland writes that drafts will not be sent back to the U S as Admiral Sims orders remaining personnel to stay ready for Germany missions. American warships have left Qu wn and crews broke up twenty six airplanes. engines removed for shipment. Fire damaged two hydro airplane hangars before suppression. He reports weight gain from Uncle Sam’s chow.
Sergt. Clark Hill of the 10st Machine Gun Company and Pvt. Jacob G. Kirchner of the 49th Infantry appear in the week’s casualty list as ill wounded. Hill was gassed October 30 and has letters home. he expected to return in March after overseas service since October 1918. Kirchner was wounded at the end of September in the left eye and also suffered injuries to the cheek and ear while in France.
Police arrest two motorists bearing 1918 New York license plates amid grace period rules. Ferdinand Madaler of 255 Vreeland Avenue fined 10 dollars for no license, with costs, by Recorder Post. Harvey J. Adelman of 1430 Park Avenue posted 10 dollars bail for trial on February 20, amid reports of extended grace due to shortages. A trolley car incident on Center Street involved another motorist, Fred Young of Whitford Avenue.
Tantum and Dickinson's Methodist Men's Club present the annual burnt cork frolic on Washington's night the 22d. The Doctor debuts two new songs one rag sung by the Doctor and another by Frank Ruaby. Dee claims a mix of old jokes and fresh material will captivate the crowd.
A memorial service for Roosevelt will be held tomorrow morning at Grace Church. The event is announced in a brief church notice for local residents and family members.
