The annual town report highlights a $100 expenditure table showing school funding as the largest share of taxpayer outlay. It notes the fiscal year ending June 1 1916 and explains the Commissioners’ plan to publish future reports by May 1 with May 15 deadlines.
In his annual report to the Commissioners Collector Van Riper shows the town received 174,947.24 from real estate and other taxes with 43,610 to schools and 79,413.87 to Revenue and Finance. It lists uncollected real estate taxes of 25,681.47 and personal levies of 2,396.24. Bond debt stood at 676,000 with 4.7 percent average interest. The poor department disbursed 607 to seventeen families, including 100 to the town physician.
A check for eighteen cents representing the verdict in three of six slander suits tied to Belleville recall efforts was given to Jerome T. Congleton, attorney for plaintiffs, by W. H. K. Davey, attorney for defendants. Remaining unsettled include a $100 judgment by Mayor John H. Waters against Scaine and a $500 award in Davey’s suit against John H. Flanagan with an appeal notice. An additional $100 judgment against Scaine by Anthony La Tirza remains payable.

Avitern Steathers of Vreeland ave was brought from St Mary's Hospital Passaic on Sunday after fracturing his hip in a fall about a month ago. He is expected to go about on crutches soon.
The Chief of Police gains greater time for child protection during school attendance and dismissal at Washington School while public safety receives townwide focus. Two patrolmen are appointed. one covers day traffic between Centre and Chestnut on Franklin Avenue with a focus on protecting children at the Park Wheel, the other handles Franklin Avenue duties between Chestnut and Kingsland with special duties near Yantacaw School.

Howard Samuels, formerly linked with Nutley Garage & Machine Works on Washington Avenue, has returned to run the shop. Alonzo Bross, owner, announced yesterday that Samuels signed a contract to supervise all machine and repair work at the Washington Avenue concern.
Police lean to self inflicted death theory for a man found on the Erie tracks at Bloomfield avenue after a West Nutley express. Only two women called at Kunz’s morgue in Orange and could not identify him. Engineer recalls no crash details. the victim, about 45, six feet tall, wore a black coat and gray trousers with stained hands and no papers.
Under the wife of Miss Laura R Newkirk of Oswego New York Hazel Straight Sanborn wife of J F Sanborn 27 Brookfield Avenue filed for probate in Syracuse She is sole heir to an eleven thousand dollar estate including a home in Oswego other real estate and personal property Miss Newkirk died December 30 the executor Mrs Sanborn formerly adopted by Miss Newkirk The Sanborns have lived in Nutley for about a year and a half since leaving New York.
Surrogate Fred C. Stickel Jr of Essex County will address the Woman's Club Friday evening February 9 at 8 30 under the Legal Committee. All members and invited male family members may attend. The talk titled The Relation of Parents and Child Under New Jersey Law will cover wills drawing.
An extra period settled a basketball game between Nutley and Glen Ridge girls. Glen Ridge led 15 to 5 at halftime before Nutley’s Claire Banta and Helen Scorso rallied to tie and force overtime where Helen Scorso scored the winning basket.
Fourteen year old William Vincent, son of H. C. Vincent of 152 Centre Street, was bitten on the left leg by a dog Saturday afternoon while playing near Passaic Avenue and Kingsland Street.
Local residents R. D. Donaldson John W. Heindel and E. A. Child were drawn to serve on the present Petit Jury Panel.
The Ladies' Aid Safety group will hold its annual luncheon at Vincent Church on Thursday February 8 at 1 PM. Plans for 1999 work will be outlined during the meeting.
