Officials report a sharp tax rate drop this year while the budget faces changes. An estimated shortfall or surplus of about $400,000 is under review as departments propose adjustments and revenue projections are updated.
Commissioner A. S. Wildey, former Exalted Ruler of Nutley Lodge of Elks, was presented Wednesday night with a distinctive signet ring. The ring features two diamonds and Elks figures on its sides.
Henry Wernsing the one armed balloon jumper was arrested for a second time after descending near Nutley. He was arraigned before Recorder Ponty and fined $25 with an appeal planned. Authorities enforce a Nutley ordinance prohibiting dropping objects from balloons above the town. The case follows Supreme Court action on the regulation.
Long list of names and units shows boys from New Jersey and nearby areas joining naval militia, engineers, infantry and aviation units. Entries include Broadbent Earl R, Beaumont John K, Connolly, Leon P, Ferris Howard E, Parise Island, and many others heading to camps, ships, or training locations like Fort Leavenworth and Toronto with July 15 leave notices.
Exemption Board for First Essex County District reports only 22 of 79 quota secured from Nutley and Belleville after first call of 150 summoned. Instructions exceed quota by ten percent to 87, but many Nutley men appeal doubt the disposal. A list shows Nutley residents summoned, with names and addresses, as draft prospects from the initial batch.
A Burnett resident named Usina faces a $20 fine tied to a local permit issue. Officials report the citation was issued after an inspection and remains subject to standard appeal procedures.
Raymond W. Symonds of Grant Avenue and Weld Arnold of Whitford Avenue were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U S Army during graduation at Platteburg Training Camp. Fifteen New Jersey boys graduated. Symonds and Arnold among those chosen for regular army officers. Other New Jersey graduates include Cecil J. North and Mario M. de Vitalis of Newark, George T. Metcalfe of Morristown, Edward A. la Roy Jr. of Newark, Carlton Banigan of Paterson, Jay J. M. Scran of Englewood, C Kennon Clarke of Bogota, and Stewart K. McLanahan of Princeton, among others.
Work on the new Spring Arden School west of Bloomfield progresses with exterior walls rising. Crews are outlining and grading the site as the project moves through the building phase this season.
The Girls' Agricultural League harvested beans and corn this week and sold produce to stores and individuals. They expect to turn over a large sum to the Home Protective League this fall, with seed and fertilizer for corn contributed by Miss Van Winkle.
Charles P. Donaldson of Union Avenue served in the First Regiment of Engineers after war began. He has been hospitalized at Washington Barracks for three weeks after a hike injury and is awaiting return to duty as he recovers.
Local men aged eighteen to forty are urged to join a new State Militia organized in New Jersey to replace the National Guard in Federal service. Governor Edge arranged the plan at a Sea Girt conference, with weekly drills, summer camp, and rifle practice. The state will supply arms and equipment, enrollment sought in Nutley and surrounding suburbs at Montclair Armory.
A watermelon social hosted by the Stars and Stripes Council invites guests to attend on August 2. The event lists officers and roles including Mountin as councilor, Grace Abbi as assistant councilor, Kierstead as vice councilor, and Paxton as outside des trustee, with other named positions and attendees referenced in the notice.
