Four buildings burned in Youngstown Ohio during a police and firemen strike that left the city with minimal protection. Fire Chief George Panno said three housing project structures under construction were hit and the fourth was a vacant house. The housing project blaze was labeled arson by Panno.
Police and fire unions walked out in a 50 year contract dispute closing 12 of 13 fire stations and curtailing garbage pickup. Police Chief Baker reported thin patrols while Mayor Hunter said talks showed movement as residents and shopkeepers grew uneasy.
The League of Women Voters Education Fund reports only about one-fifth of the required 250000 dollars raised for four presidential and vice presidential candidate debates. Peggy Lampl says the debates will proceed regardless, using existing organizational funds. URBANA? Columbus Ohio.
About 50 of Alliance City Hospital's 80 nurses walked off the job demanding a $2.80 hourly raise and more patient care support. Hospital officials said the walkout did not block entry for workers and administrators and that nurses refused to provide emergency obstetric and coronary care.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources selected a Maumee Bay area site bordering Lake Erie for a full scale state recreation area. The park near Oregon will include lodge and cabin facilities similar to Salt Fork and Mohican. The project follows Gov. Rhodes's May proposal and a four month site search. The department already owns 1,241 acres and a 43,500 foot beach at the site.
Earl Butz will campaign for Congressman John Ashbrook in Norwalk at 9 a.m. in the high school cafeteria with coffee and donuts. Tickets are free but limited and available by calling the Republican Headquarters at 668 7220 between 1 and 4 p.m. He will also visit Ashland and Mansfield. The Huron County Board of Elections stays open until 9 tonight for voter registration ahead of Nov 2.
