Barry Goldwater rode into Ohio aboard a 17 car campaign train and labeled President Johnson as the chief enemy of social security. He linked himself to the late Robert A. Taft calling him Mr. Republican and thanked Taft Jr. for introducing him.
In sodden weather Goldwater spoke to an estimated 5 000 to 7 000 crowd, accusing Johnson of dodging campaign issues and promising to use the presidency to combat riots and social security distortions. He defended social security voting history and attacked Johnson’s FBI report response.
Democratic vice presidential nominee Hubert H. Humphrey accused Senator Barry M. Goldwater of corrupting the word conservatism. He spoke in prepared remarks at the University of Georgia in Athens.
In Saigon political unrest persisted after a tribal mutiny ended and a military victory over Viet Cong. Rangers killed 50 Viet Cong in Go Cong Province while government forces suffered 21 dead and 56 wounded in an ambush in Kieng Giang Province. Bon Sar Pa was reoccupied as mutineers released hostages.
Fidel Castro warned Cuba faces heavy economic losses similar to political strain as he blamed mass confiscations of homes for the housing shortage. He urged eviction of nonpaying tenants, noting Havana would require a city the size of the capital to house them all.
Castro says Havana will end food rationing within one year and asks Cubans to forgo Christmas pork to conserve the pig supply. He notes 1962 restrictions on clothing and consumer items remain in effect while not detailing how the plan will proceed.
