Washington reports the EPA says a Ford developed prototype 72 horsepower four cylinder engine for a quarter ton Army jeep meets the 1976 antipollution standards in initial tests. EPA administrator William D. Ruckelshaus confirmed the milestone.
Englewood Cliffs New Jersey Mercedes Benz Inc of North America recalls 2281 vehicles including the 280 SE 3.5 convertible and coupe and the 300 SE 3.5 sedan to replace fuel supply hoses and injection nozzles prone to leakage. In Cincinnati National publicity will strain former astronaut Neil Armstrong as he starts a teaching post at the University of Cincinnati. President Warren G. Bennis predicts Armstrong will be on campus Monday and on the first day of school not in a spacesuit.
Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller said he will soon propose a broad overhaul of New York prisons, potentially costing over 200 million dollars, following the Attica uprising, which ended after five days with 31 inmates and 10 hostages killed. He offered no specifics yet.
The National Education Association filed Friday in U S District Court a suit on behalf of about 2 million teachers seeking to declare most proposed salary increases lawful despite the Nixon wage-price freeze. The suit accuses administration officials of acting arbitrarily in denying raises for teachers whose work began after August 15.
Police reported two people killed and a third seriously wounded in Dayton during an argument with a barroom acquaintance. The victims were Leroy Honeycutt of Dayton and a 25 year old woman. Virgil Howard Perkins of Vandalia was in critical condition at a local hospital. The suspect remained at large.
Senator Edmund Muskie criticized the Social Security system for taking too much from low income workers and giving too little to the elderly. Speaking to about 850 Iowa Democrats at a fundraising dinner he said Nixon aides have not addressed the system's defects and that benefits cover only 60 percent of elderly needs.
Black leaders from across the United States gathered at a motel near O'Hare for a secret two day strategy session on Negro participation in the 1972 presidential election. Press was barred and security rings guarded the conference area as Roy Innis of CORE described the talks as highly secretive.

In Anchorage the first reigning Japanese monarch lands in foreign soil as Hirohito and Empress Nagako meet President Nixon on Elmendorf Air Force Base. The ceremony includes a 21 gun salute and national anthems before a private meeting with Lt. Gen. Ruegg.
The Senate Finance Committee narrowly approved an $800 million tax package 5-4, including a 1.5 cent sales tax increase. It extends the tax to auto repairs and other services, restores a $28 million two year rollback on retailer inventories, and adds $18 million from a cigar tax alongside corporate tax hikes.
A Chase Manhattan Bank branch in New York was firebombed in what police call retaliation for the Attica prison uprising. The anonymous caller claimed the bombing acted against the assault by state officers that killed 31 inmates and 10 hostages. Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller approved the prison storming.
State Rep. Ethel Swanbeck notes heavy mail opposing tax increases but few Erie and Huron County residents show a preferred option. The General Assembly considers budget tax proposals next week, and constituents may contact Mrs. Swanbeck at the Ohio House in Columbus.
Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co of Milwaukee sues to foreclose on East Main Street Norwalk property leased to W T Grant Co. It seeks $157,086 in defaulted debt plus $2,455 taxes and assessments and $50 title cost. Defendants include heirs of H Harry Shapera and other Pittsburgh residents. Grant lease runs to 1991 with renewal option to 2011. Toledo attorney William E Downing represents the insurer.
Senator George McGovern told Long Beach crowds he would grant amnesty to tens of thousands of draft dodgers if elected and Vietnam War ends. He argued amnesty would heal wounds and win support from servicemen despite family anguish.
Justice Hugo L. Black, 85, dies at Bethesda Naval Hospital eight days after retiring from the Supreme Court. President Nixon praises his independence and integrity as Chief Justice Warren Burger calls him a major legal philosopher. Black led civil liberties actions, including First Amendment and school prayer rulings, shaping constitutional rights for decades.
