Gulf Oil Corp. president Z D Bonner warned U S energy officials at Georgia Tech that a natural gas shortage could cause very bad experiences this winter as part of Project Independence.
Hong Kong authorities impose nightly water cuts for 4 million residents as the first phase of rationing begins from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. The next phase starts Oct 9 with eight hours daily and the third phase Oct 30 with four hours daily.
Donald Rumsfeld will replace Alexander Haig Jr. as White House chief of staff. Rumsfeld, 42, agreed after Ford personally persuaded him to leave his NATO ambassadorship in Brussels. Haig will leave for vacation before taking new roles as commander in Europe on Nov. 1 and NATO supreme allied commander on Dec. 15.
Former President Richard Nixon, physically fatigued by a chronic phlebitis flare, begins hospital tests at Long Beach Memorial with spokesman Ron Ziegler noting his low spirits but sharp mind. Nixon arrived by car with Pat Nixon and Julie Eisenhower as Secret Service guarded the scene.
Arab media reacted with anger to attacks on oil price policy by President Ford and Henry Kissinger. Arab League sources in Cairo called the statements a serious move reflecting American intentions toward the Arab region, and a Beirut paper called them a declaration of war.
In Dayton Ohio UPI reports a federal agent Jerry D Johnston aged 37 from Wayne Township was fatally wounded in a chest and head after an argument with partner Kasper Carroll Gibson age 30 from Union City in their office. Five rounds found on the office floor. Gibson injured with minor hand wounds.
Ohio Farm Bureau Federation executive says subfreezing temps in Northwestern Ohio froze unharvested tomatoes right to the core causing an estimated 6 million dollars in crop damage. Toledo area temperatures fell to 26 degrees early Monday.
Increasing cloudiness and not very cold tonight with low in mid to upper 40s. Wednesday will be warmer with a 20 to 30 percent chance of showers and highs in the upper 60s. Also listed are marriage license applications births and a death in the area.
A four year old Allison Mechem, daughter of Taft Broadcasting official Charles Mechem Jr., was abducted from her Mt Lookout yard while riding a tricycle. Police fear the kidnapper may be mentally unstable after demanding only 2000 dollars for her safe return. Steve Bachmeyer, 6, reported seeing a man pull her off her bike and into a car. An anonymous caller issued the ransom within hours.
The appeal of Larry D. Robinson, convicted Aug. 21, 1973, of first degree and felony murder in the Womack taxi-owner slayings near Willard, was argued. Witnesses and prosecutors defended and challenged premeditation and robbery elements while Robinson’s alias James Wines is noted.
Negotiations between Norwalk officials and municipal workers resume at 7:30 p.m. in city hall over a new wage schedule and fringe benefits. The administration will be represented by Mayor Wayne Goodsite, Douglas Colvin, and council members, while workers weigh joining the Ohio Civil Service Employes Association, with several noting voluntary membership and potential representation by Keaton or others. The talks center on wages, dental insurance, and sick leave with a proposed three year contract and a 94.5 cent across the board jump in 1975, plus 44.5 cents for cost of living and 30 cents annually in later years. the 1975 budget allocates $73,000, but officials consider up to $120,000 feasible.
City officials reveal options for a year round pool, with estimates from 130000 to 225000 for covering the municipal pool. Mayor Goodsite notes the session will inform boards but no formal action will be taken. The public joint meeting follows the 7 30 p.m. planning commission session.
