COLUMBUS Senate Republicans plan to move soon on a two year budget of 710 million dollars funded mainly by a 1.5 percent sales tax hike. The Finance Committee meets today to vote on the appropriations bill as a first step toward a floor package next week. GOP leaders keep options open but say a personal income tax would have little floor support in the Senate. Gov. Gilligan had said he would let the Senate produce a bill with or without his approval.
The Ohio House approved 2 3 4 million in loans to 28 districts including South Central Local to keep them open through year end. Superintendent Lowell Etzler opposes the plan, saying it merely delays bankruptcy and will require repayment from state foundation funds later. Representative Ethel Swanbeck noted the loans aim to sustain districts until a new budget is adopted.

Huron County reports 1,150 new under-21 registrations and 238 registrations on Wednesday as of the November deadline. Total registered voters reach 18,280 with possible duplicates noted by elections director Mrs. Kenneth Earl. The board has added 2,343 voters since May primaries and observers say the under-21 tally is just under half of the Secretary of State’s eligible estimate.
