The Labor Department reports a 0.5 percent rise in the cost of living for August, marking a third straight monthly increase. The annual inflation rate reaches 6 percent, driven by higher costs for clothing gasoline and fruits and vegetables. Ford's 1976 projection was 5 percent.

UPI reports US Steel lobbyist William Whyte says the company paid room and board for at least two Ford visits to the Pine Valley Golf Club lodge in New Jersey when Ford was a congressman. Whyte recalls covering caddy fees and notes lodge guest records exist in a limestone mine in Pennsylvania. Ford has not used the lodge for VIP visits since leaving Congress.
