Los Angeles Superior Court judge Lester E. Olson ordered entertainer Doris Day to receive more than 22 million dollars after finding former lawyer and business manager Jerome B. Rosenthal guilty of defrauding Day and her late husband.
In Dorchester Boston a patrolman stood guard at Jamaica Plain High School when a shot was fired. Detective Thomas M. Smith was uninjured as police recovered the bullet and investigated whether a passing car fired the shot or if a rifle or pistol was used.
Washington Redskins coach George Allen disclosed that former President Richard Nixon, longtime Redskins fan, has called him twice to wish the team well. Nixon even once phoned from the White House sidelines during a game and offered a play suggestion used by the Redskins.
United Press International reports the worst flood in three decades prompted evacuations of at least 200 families from Abilene Texas suburbs. Police said waters began breaking over creek banks and crest was expected after midnight with flash flood watches remaining in effect across central and southern West Texas.
UPI reports preliminary data show both pilot and co pilot did not make required altitude callouts during the Eastern Airlines DC9 instrument landing approach. NTSB head William Lamb says callouts are mandatory and the jet was cleared for an instrument landing before crashing, killing 71.
Columbus officials proposed a 60 million dollar electric power plant fueled mainly by city trash to tackle long term solid waste disposal and street-lighting issues. Mayor Tom Moody said the plant could be operating by 1980 if approved.
The Pentagon announced deserters may call special numbers to learn specifics of the conditional amnesty program. Deserters facing additional charges were urged to call before turning themselves in. Federal authorities charged 44 year old Jesse C Jennings in connection with the Firelands Community Bank robbery in Berlin Heights Ohio on March 30. Jennings was arrested August 21 at his Bellevue home and linked to a Chesterhill bank theft five days earlier. The robber escaped with about $13000 as a gray haired man wearing a mask.
A newly formed Presbyterian group voted to rename itself the Presbyterian Church in America after earlier switches from National Presbyterian Church and then National Reformed Presbyterian Church. Delegates from 18 states objected to the term reformed, amid a dispute with the former name.
Pentagon says a loophole lets deserters avoid 24 months of alternate service after accepting amnesty. In two days 86 calls came from deserters or relatives. Fort Benjamin Harrison reported 92 calls. Deserters with an undesirable discharge lose military jurisdiction and cannot be forced to complete alternate service. Draft evaders must finish alternate service or face prosecution.
William Baines 16 Glover Street will become the first senior to receive a pass to all Norwalk city school activities in a ceremony at the City Administration Building at 2 30 p m. The pass allows free admission to athletic events concerts and plays. Eligibility covers district male residents 65 or older and females 62 or older. Passes available via the Board Office 19 21 Hester Street and in time for Friday’s Norwalk Bucyrus football game.
FBI agents investigated four people seen in a red Cadillac in Norwalk Sunday night connected to Patricia Hearst's disappearance. An agent said the leads are unlikely to produce a breakthrough and noted the name Tania sparked the inquiry.
Michigan State University psychologist Glenn Hatton notes stressed rats show increased alcohol consumption after being returned to their home cages. He compares the pattern to harried executives and suggests alcohol may help the body cope with stress.
