In Washington on Wednesday, over 1,500 coal miners and families demonstrated on the Capitol steps for stronger Black Lung legislation. One demonstrator wore a cigar during the protest, captured by a UPI telephoto.
The Federal Trade Commission reports after tax profits for manufacturers rose 34.4 percent in the April to June quarter to 12.5 billion dollars after dipping 43 percent to 9.3 billion in the first quarter. This rebound signals economic recovery from a severe recession.
The Agriculture Department reported a rapidly maturing 1975 corn crop with subnormal temperatures causing only light frost damage in northern states. About five percent of the potential record harvest had been collected by last Sunday. Governor Rhodes says he remains open to a public employee collective bargaining bill but will not use it as bond issue leverage. He stated he does not live in a pressure cooker and keeps an open mind on the legislation.

Adams told the House Select Committee on Intelligence that corruption in the intelligence process and deliberate downgrading of Viet Cong strength helped blind U.S. authorities to the Tet offensive. He testified the Pentagon resisted raising troop estimates fearing public reaction, and urged declassification of documents to reveal the full story. He warned the committee it would seek court action to obtain White House material without strings attached.
In Detroit Bonnie Hinton and her husband tracked a burglary from June 27. They intercepted Eugene Russell, recovered the cash register marked Thank You Bonnie's Market, and found more loot at Howard Hinton's party store. Russell was found guilty in court.
UPI reports New Hampshire Democrat John Durkin won the runoff over Republican Louis Wyman, shrinking the GOP’s hold on key panels. Durkin’s oath by Norris Cotton sets a 62 to 38 Senate split, triggering changes on the Foreign Relations and other committees and ending a long recount dispute.
A truck carrying 1300 cases of Miller beer overturned downtown. Beer flooded streets and broken glass litters the area. To prevent chaos an adjusted decided to hand out the remaining beer while bystanders hoarded bottles in baskets and hats. Fort Worth patrolman J M Dodd and insurance adjuster Willard Martin describe the chaotic scene with crowds taking beer amid the debris.
In Texas Martin said he tried to sell beer for $2 a case before giving it away after police cleared the roadway. Two people in the truck were slightly injured. The beer was moving from a Fort Worth brewery to Colorado.
Huron County's 127 year old Shady Lane county home will close this afternoon. The last nine residents will move to nursing homes in Norwalk and Willard as administrator John Laible says it is now time to button up. The facility was slated to close earlier with delays due to bed availability.
Sheryl Werner 23 asks for a jury trial in the shooting death of her brother last November. Charged with negligent homicide, she allegedly shot him in the head with a .38 caliber pistol at 8 Parsons St. A court trial had been set before Judge Robert W. Smith but was postponed.
