Weather Lifts Crowds at Huron County Fair

Warm sunny weather drew the largest attendance of the year to the Huron County Fair on Friday. Officials led by fair president Ray Feichtner praised the turnout as extra good while noting minor mishaps and jammed parking. Traffic swelled between 7 and 8:30 p.m. as grandstand auto thrill shows entertained visitors.

Parachute Ride Breaks at Huron County Fair Injures Man

A Norwalk man, Lawrence Burkett, 31, was injured when a parachute ride at the Huron County Fair broke and the car dropped to a boarding ramp trapping his left leg. His 13 year old daughter, Gwendolyn, was upset but not believed injured. Sheriff ordered the ride closed and investigation noted a cast iron support pipe broke.

Derailment near Geneva halts freight trains. no injuries

Officials attributed the derailment of 73 freight cars and four diesel engines to a poorly loaded piece of machinery. Two Norfolk and Western trains collided Friday night in Geneva, Ohio, carrying general merchandise coal and grain.
