George C Scott announces in Hollywood he will retire from acting to devote himself to producing and directing motion pictures. The famed American actor, regarded by many as among the finest, plans to focus on behind the camera work.
In Charleston area schools, a two week fight over textbooks ends as Superintendent Kenneth Underwood orders schools to reopen after withdrawing books for 30 days to review their contents. Protest leaders say they are satisfied though some titles cover prostitution cheating and religion.
The Labor Department proposed new rules to push able bodied adults on welfare to register for the Work Incentive program at local employment offices. The plan, effective in 30 days, would change previous practice where some registration occurred only at welfare offices.
President Ford announced that Alexander Haig Jr a former four star general and Nixon aide was appointed supreme commander of NATO and commander of U S forces in Europe He succeeds H R Haldeman who resigned in 1973 Haig is 49 and retired from active duty in 1973.
The postponed heavyweight title fight between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali will be set for October 22 or October 29. Promoters Hank Schwartz and Video Techniques Inc said Zaire officials will choose and announce the final date within 48 hours. Foreman is staying in Zaire after a training cut.
U.S. District Judge Fred Nichol dismissed all charges against Dennis Banks and Russell Means after a juror illness halted the trial of the Wounded Knee occupation leaders. The judge cited government misconduct as grounds for the dismissal, ending more than eight months of trial.
