U S helicopter gunships fired rockets and machine guns on fleeing Vietnamese civilians in the Mekong Delta, killing seven and wounding 17. Military officials said the group was mistaken for Viet Cong fugitives as South Vietnamese soldiers searched the marshy area. The incident followed a Tuesday Army sweep in the same zone. Illinois House Speaker Ralph Smith is a leading candidate for the late Everett Dirksen’s Senate seat and Governor Ogilvie plans to name a successor today.

The Board of Education purchased a 141 by 77 foot lot from the state of Ohio for 13628, the highest of two bids. Bids opened Monday night. The plan is to raze the house on the lot and turn the site into a play area for Benedict Elementary. The lot was the estate of the late Mrs. Winifred Coger of 11 Walnut.
Norwalk officials revived a one percent income tax plan to fund private ambulance subsidies after two funeral homes cut service. Councilman Richard Becker said the move would be clearer with full figures, with a 1970 budget deficit of 38 thousand dollars noted. The plan could raise 300 to 400 thousand dollars, while a half percent option was favored by a citizens committee.
