In Cleveland on the East Side a junior high school suffered damage from arson firebombing Wednesday night. Police apprehended two suspects aged 18 and 19 while eight others were being sought as firefighters fought the blaze.
In eastern Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes and rival State Sen. Frazier Reams Jr. rally across multiple towns. Rhodes calendars include Coshocton Zanesville and New Lexington events plus a Columbus meeting. Reams plans a Martins Ferry luncheon and a Bellaire tea.
Clearing and windy today with a high around 60 and a cool night in the 40s. Friday stays partly cloudy and cool. Sunrise is 6 07 a.m. Sunset 7 37 p.m. Wednesday highs near 75 and lows around 61. Charles Conrad and Richard Gordon splashed down 9:59 a.m. EDT about 702 miles east of Cape Kennedy aboard an automated Gemini 11. Officials called the landing the best ever, noting precise autonomous guidance and a strong overall mission for an American lead in manned spaceflight.
Three miners Keith Spicer Tony Territti and William Adams were trapped by a deep soft coal mine fire in Bethesda Ohio. Rescue teams were withdrawn and the Morgan Mine Co operation sealed the mine after Lester Zimmerman of the State Mines Bureau said the men were absolutely dead. Adams entered the mine to search for his colleagues and was trapped with them over 1000 feet from the entrance. If sealed airless conditions hold the fire could burn out in about two weeks.
EHOVE superintendent J Creighton Ghrist told The Reflector that the vocational school will be located near Milan Township after an informal joint session of the EHOVE and Berlin Milan boards. Two possible tracts east of Milan were discussed with bond issues and levies already on the ballot.
Huron County Sheriff John Borgia of Norwalk is named chairman of the Roger Cloud and William Saxbe Campaign Committees in Huron County. Cloud seeks election to a four year term as state auditor after a September appointment. Saxbe runs for a third term as Ohio attorney general. Borgia is noted as a young sheriff and active in civic groups.
A record 18 000 people attended the Huron County Fair on Wednesday for Norwalk Day with 13 000 paid admissions and about 5 000 passes. Fans packed the grandstand for the Midwestern Hay Ride Show as clear weather aided attendance. Events included 4 H Halter Class judging, an open class pony pull with 46 entrants, and a fireworks display. Harness races were planned, with wrestling at 8 p m and a Junior Fair parade Friday morning kicking off a full day of events including saddle horse judging and pony judging. The Hurricane Haz Drivers were set for two grandstand performances at 7 and 9 p m.
Gov. James A. Rhodes will report to the people when he and state candidates tour the Huron County Fair Friday afternoon. They expect to arrive at the fair grounds around 3 p.m. and stay about an hour and a half near the Republican tent.
Ohio Department of Highways officials plan a two phase study to relocate Route 250 north and east of its present site. The project would create a four lane limited access highway from the Norwalk bypass to Route 6 with hearings possibly before year end.
