Leopold Stokowski died at his Hampshire country cottage at noon on Tuesday following a heart attack while recovering from a virus. The famed maestro, age 95, had just marked 60 years as a recording artist with CBS and planned to record Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2 under contract until age 101. Born in London to Polish Irish parents, he led the Cincinnati, Philadelphia and Houston orchestras and founded the American Symphony Orchestra of New York to promote youth and minorities.
