Radio duo drink on air to warn of drink driving

Charleston police and state officials watched as radio personalities Roger Galloway and Mike Hammer drank on air to illustrate drunkenness. After multiple drinks they slurred speech and misjudged distances, prompting a police on-air warning about driving while intoxicated. They then left the station to be driven home for Labor Day weekend.

Sandusky Man Dies In High Speed Beltline Crash

A Sandusky man, Gary Lee Vanderpool, 24, died instantly when his car struck an embankment at Strecker Road and South West Road. Two youths were injured. Sidney Allen, 18, in critical condition with skull fracture, and Thomas Oney, 18, in fairly good condition. Seat belts were not in use.

Norwalk Bus Routes Revised After City Bypass Change

Norwalk district officials announced last minute revisions to school bus routes due to road construction and a Benedict Norwood area closure. Robert Kromer said it will take about three days to assess, with possible extra bus if needed, and warned times may shift as routes 250 and multiple elementary stops are restructured to shuttle students to St Marys St Pauls and Bronson schools.

Guardsmen to Begin Pulling Out of Dayton Quelling Racial Disorder

National Guard officials plan to withdraw part of the 964 troops sent to Dayton on Thursday to quell racial unrest on the west side. Col James Clem said reductions began Friday night and, with no new violence, he would likely send home more units today. Street patrols remained armed but scenes were near normal as authorities dispersed crowds and shut a West Third Street bar and bowling alley after repeated patrols.

Bypass To Close Norwood Avenue Near South Norwalk

Balte Construction Co announces the Norwalk bypass project will close Norwood Avenue just south of Fair Road starting Tuesday. Route 61 South has reopened, while Norwood Avenue and Old State Road remain blocked until about December 1. South Norwalk Road should reopen around October 15.

Two More Planes Downed In Viet Nam

UPI reports two more aircraft losses in North Viet Nam with pilots saved. An Air Force F105 crashed near Dong Hoi after a strafing run. Capt Edward Skerwon survived a sea rescue. A Navy Skyraider from USS Intrepid was also recovered after a water pickup. Lt Cmdr Thomas Tucker was later rescued near Haiphong after his F8 Crusader was shot down.

Cafeterias To Be Open Tuesday In Norwalk Schools

All Norwalk City Schools will serve complete lunches Tuesday as announced by Mrs. Harry Notzinger. The high school lunch price rises to 35 cents from 30, while elementary lunches stay at 25 cents and junior high at 30 cents. extra sandwiches cost 15 cents.
