Traffic Deaths Below Estimates This Labor Day Weekend

Traffic deaths during the Labor Day holiday were running below last year’s total, with a United Press International count at 4 am showing 570 traffic fatalities from Friday to Monday. Drownings raised the overall death toll, as warm weather kept vacationers at lakes and pools. California led states with 59 traffic deaths, followed by Texas 46, Wisconsin 27, and Illinois 26. The National Safety Council predicted final summer-long totals would be in the very low 600s.
