Search Halted For Pilot From Melbourne Flight
The ground air and sea search for pilot Frederick Valentich who vanished after reporting an unidentified flying object has been called off. Eight civil aircraft and an air force plane scoured 1,000 square miles of ocean near Bass Strait without success. The quest now depends on ships and planes crossing between Victoria and Tasmania to locate any wreckage. Valentich, 20, was flying from Moorabbin Airport to King Island when he said he was followed by a strange craft. His flight recording will be replayed to include every hiss and noise from takeoff until the transmission cut off with him saying it was not an aircraft. The mystery has revived UFO reports across eastern Victoria and southern New South Wales.
