Carter says he will cancel trip if energy bill stalls

President Carter says he will cancel his nine nation trip starting Nov. 22 if Congress does not pass a comprehensive energy program. Top aides say he told House energy conferees he will stay in Washington to ensure completion and avoid a stall as the trip nears.

Mulhouse Says Kidnappers Claim Schleyer Executed

A gang in Mulhouse France claims to have killed West German industrialist Hanns Martin Schleyer by a single bullet to the head in retaliation for a Stuttgart and Somalia action. Schleyer’s body was found in a car trunk in Mulhouse near the German border. He was 62, with one gunshot wound and a skull wound. other details were not released.

North Korea says South Korean defectors cross DMZ

North Korea announced that a South Korean battalion commander and his aide defected to the North across the DMZ. It marks the second such defection North Korea has reported in less than two weeks.

Kent State President Bans Unauthorised Rallies at Gym Site

Kent State University President Brage Golding posted a formal campus notice Wednesday night prohibiting unauthorized rallies at the gymnasium construction site this weekend. The order targets demonstrations planned for October 22 to 24 and warns of appropriate legal sanctions for violators.

Food Processing Plant Eyes Norwalk Site

Norwalk is eyed for a multi million dollar food processing plant that could employ about 450 people and boost the tax base. The project may require expansion of water filtration and sewage plants and is one of three industries considering Norwalk with Erie County and two other sites also in contention.

Norwalk Church to Ordain Woman on Sunday

Kathy Lukke, 27, will be ordained as Rev Kathy Lukke at St Peter Lutheran Church Norwalk the first woman ordained there and likely in Norwalk. The ordination comes amid the American Lutheran Church history with 5000 congregations, with the sermon by Dr Paul Sonnack and ordination by Rev Quentin Battiste. Kathy will serve as assistant pastor at Glen Cary Lutheran Anoka after ordination.

Frontier Jetliner hijacked to force bank robber release

A 29 year old Grand Island man hijacked a Frontier Airlines 737 with 35 aboard after forcing through a Nebraska security checkpoint. The crew flew to Kansas City for fuel then toward Atlanta while demanding the release of George David Stewart, a Fulton National Bank suspect, plus 3 million dollars and two parachutes and guns. Stewart, jailed in Fulton County, faces federal charges. FBI and local police negotiated as the plane refueled and prepared for a flight to Atlanta.
