More than 400 students and staff were evacuated from EHOVE Joint Vocational School in Milan after an anonymous caller warned to evacuate at 10 30. Officials said the message was not a bomb threat. No devices were found after searches by the Erie County Sheriff's Department and Milan Fire Department. Students returned about 11 15.

Petitions Ready For Free Downtown Parking Lots
A five member Downtown Steering Committee plans to circulate petitions to form a special assessment district funding four new parking lots and removing meters. Signatures of 75 percent of assessable property owners in the defined downtown area are required, excluding city county and federal land. The district would tax most property owners, with exemptions for certain small dwellings, starting at about 3.39 dollars per hundred of assessed value, subject to future change.

Parcel Post Rates Rise Across the Board
Postmaster Russell T. Grell announced higher parcel post and catalog rates to take effect Saturday. The average increase is 10.5 percent with most parcels costing an extra ten cents. Local minimum rises from 40 to 50 cents and outer area from 50 to 60 cents. The IC C approved the changes in July to offset higher postal costs from last year’s pay raises.
