Sunday Columbus Day events included Yvonne Gail Phillips named Miss Columbus representing Columbus Indiana. She competed against contestants from nine towns named after explorers including a contestant from Columbus Ohio where the pageant took place.
Authorities say they still have no clues to the whereabouts of Linda Mae Peugeot, 21, and her 2 year old daughter Lori Mae, abducted three weeks ago by Stanley B. Hoss Junior. An FBI search spanned four states, but agents reported no tips from the kidnapper who has admitted the Sept. 22 abduction.
Mrs Paul Bailey of Mentor swore out a warrant charging her 19 year old daughter Kathy Shaffer with child stealing and branding her an unfit mother. Shaffer testified as a key witness in the Hell s Angels cafe murders case and her pregnancy by another witness was disclosed in court. BROOKVILLE Ohio women operators at General Telephone walked off over union dispute with the dismissal of the union president and a contract violation claim setting up picket lines outside the switchboard.
Nine persons riding in a compact sedan were killed when a Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad freight train hit their auto at a marked crossing in Conneautville Pennsylvania. Eight died at the scene and one died later at a hospital. Bodies scattered along the tracks.
Southeastern Ohio teachers seek better salaries as Wood County West Virginia starts at 6820 dollars for new hires versus about 5200 dollars in nearby Ohio counties. Ohio Attorney General Paul W. Brown called the state's narcotics abuse distressing and ongoing in a seven month study ordered by Gov. Rhodes. He urged a comprehensive plan combining education, rehabilitation, law enforcement and community services with expanded funding and compulsory treatment for addicts.
The Soviet Union placed a third manned craft in Earth orbit fo r a three-ship effort including Soyuz 6 7 and 8 aimed at a permanent space station. Three members of the Los Angeles county district attorney's Vital Organ Transplant Committee are drafting a bill recognizing brain death as death when the brain is irreversibly nonfunctional. If enacted it would be the nation’s first such law. The trio plans to present the proposal to colleagues and District Attorney Evelle Younger before possible state submission.

A 28 year old Toledo man, Russell Davis, was seriously hurt when his motorcycle engine exploded during a time trial on Route 18. Davis remains in intensive care at Toledo Hospital after transfer from Fisher-Titus Memorial. A Dragway official cited mechanical failure. A bystander, Robert Tuenin, 23, Amherst, was struck by debris and treated then released.
Oslo reports Sonja Henie longtime skating icon and film star died Sunday night on an ambulance flight between Paris and Oslo. The Norwegian champion with 10 world titles and three Olympic golds had been ill for a year. Born April 8 1912 in Oslo she began skating at eight and won Oslo and national titles by age 11.
In Washington UPI reports the NAB plans to run anti smoking spots for at least four more years even as radio and TV cigarette ads end next September. The Supreme Court declined to rule on the controversy upholding a 1968 DC Circuit decision that the federal government may require significant air time for anti smoking messages.
About 250 Norwalk youngsters from kindergarten to second grade rode a fire truck Saturday after completing home fire safety surveys. The ride loop went from the fire station on Whittlesey Avenue up Benedict Avenue to Norwood Avenue and back with sirens blaring to stress fire prevention and smoking hazards.
