A 28 foot sightseeing cruiser named Americana capsized on Greenwood Lake on the New York New Jersey border. Two elderly women were killed and 18 injured. William Doig aged 52 faces two counts of second degree manslaughter. Coast Guard to begin investigation.
President Ford will speak at a White House news conference tonight in the Executive Office Building auditorium with live broadcast at 8 p.m. EDT. He will also answer questions from regional and White House reporters in Detroit Friday afternoon.
Gerald J. Patronite director of the Ohio Lottery Commission announced that first year ticket sales reached 107.5 million with 42.77 million in profit. He noted profits benefited primary and secondary education public welfare and higher education, saying the lottery supported schools and improved lives.
The House Ways and Means Committee votes to end the federal income tax deduction for state and local gasoline taxes. The move would add about 575 million dollars annually to the Treasury while preserving current medical deductions casualty losses and other simplifications under consideration.

The Western Reserve school board voted to convert the Middle School boiler to burn propane to cut costs amid a 40 percent natural gas reduction. Estimated conversion cost is $3,825 with about 18,000 gallons needed. propane at 33 cents per gallon would total around $6,000, while natural gas replacement costs are ~ $2,200. The plan aims to avoid shutdowns and avoid costly fuel oil rebuilds.
Douglas Colvin 42, Norwalk finance director and income tax service operator, was elected president of the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce. He will assume the post in January, succeeding Thomas Carabin. Colvin, a five year chamber director and current second vice president, lives at 12 Indian Terrace with his wife Jeannette and three sons. He also heads the St. Paul Board of Education and serves on the Toledo Catholic Diocese education board. New officers include Robert Roth first vice president and treasurer and Richard Westhofen hospital administrator second vice president.
The Postal Service halted printing 13 cent air mail stamps and says using them will be a waste after Saturday. First class mail remains 10 cents until year end and will be as fast as air mail within the United States. Regular mail with a 10 cent stamp will travel by air where distance warrants, but the 13 cent rate is set to take effect December 31. Abroad rates stay higher by air. A spokesman notes anyone with air mail stamps can trade them for full value at any post office.
