Former Norwalk Athlete Killed in Truck Explosion
Draxler and Hay died in a transport crash as Blakely’s truck exploded. Blakely escaped with minor injuries after backing away. Fire crews from New Riegel and Bascom and the sheriff’s department investigated the scene in Norwalk. Draxler, a 1968 Norwalk High graduate, played football basketball and track at Norwalk and Heidelberg College. He set school high jump records and earned three track and two football letters. Hay, 20, a St Meinrad Seminary student, planned priesthood studies and had twin sister Marty. Hay remained in critical care after emergency treatment. Both were linked to a load of steel discs and an Ohio route from Buffalo to Mason.
