In 89 600 UNITED FUND drive President B Harry Parke says collections and pledges reach about 9600 with more expected today. In White Plains New York a state Supreme Court justice awarded Dr James Slater Murphy absolute custody of four children after the Rockefeller divorce. The court kept visitation for Mrs Rockefeller who also receives generous vacation rights. The judge noted the children are healthy and content and that the current arrangement does not harm their welfare.
Mrs Joyce Hallamby aged 40 quits her post as a school crossing patrol officer after being hit by vehicles three times in six years. She says she has had enough work in fear for her life and will resign.
UPI dispatch reports Barry Goldwater blasting President Johnson as soft on communism and condemning disarmament talk. In Seymour he warned of drastic military cuts if Johnson wins and said the U.S. is disarming by not producing new weapons. He argued two branches exceed constitutional powers and criticized Medicare and Viet Nam handling. Goldwater urged truth on television about Vietnam.
IBEW Local 986 officials persist with a no comment stance on the union position in the contract dispute with Northern Ohio Telephone Co. Spokesman G Ira Liedorff said the union would not issue statements even as management positions were public. A 2 pm meeting is set tomorrow to seek a last ditch contract agreement. the prior contract expired in August. Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service notes NOT employees have authorized a strike, though no strike time has been set if talks fail.
