Ford Motor Co and Chrysler plan to ask government approval to raise car and truck prices for 1972 models under Phase II of Nixon price controls. GM and AMC expected to follow. amounts undisclosed pending more government data.
The Ohio Senate nears a floor vote on a Republican led income tax bill aiming to raise near one billion dollars with a 0.5 to 3 percent graduated rate. Gov Gilligan favors a different plan. Conferees, led by Sen Paul Gillmor and Rep Michael Maloney, face disputes on property tax relief and a corporate franchise tax amid lobbying from manufacturers and unions.
In Columbus Mrs. Margaret Delany flies a 34 foot flagpole flag in memory of her son John who died in Vietnam. The flag was burned by vandals on October 14, drawing sympathy from readers and a parade of donated flags. A Gahanna third grade class sent a flag and notes saying they study the flag and the war.
President Nixon appoints Earl L. Butz 62 to be agriculture secretary succeeding Clifford M. Hardin who moves to Ralston Purina as vice chairman in charge of research and development. Butz, an Eisenhower era Purdue University dean, joins a cabinet arena shaped by high grain yields and low farm prices.
Partly cloudy and mild today with a high in the 50s and a cool night. Saturday brings sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 50s with a 10 percent precipitation chance. Norwalk temperatures record a high of 49 and a low of 28 with varied humidity through the day. Birth notices list three local couples, each announcing a newborn boy. Death notices include Joseph W. On the first anniversary of the 1970 Marshall plane crash 75 died including players and coaches. The community plans a living memorial with observances around Saturdays Marshall versus Toledo game and a new Marshall Memorial Student Center.
In Londonderry the IRA says gunmen freed a Roman Catholic teenage girl seized by Bogside women during a so called trial for fraternizing with British soldiers. The girl was unharmed, while another badly beaten girl was found on High Street after the weekend unrest.
The burglary at the American Vitamin and Cosmetic Co. discount store Tuesday night will run into thousands of dollars, supervisor Ralph Sandler said after a preliminary inventory. Thirty watches and multiple other items were stolen including cash, cigarettes, radios, a percolator, cameras, lighters, wallets, hair dryers, and cologne.
Three White House correspondents accused the Nixon administration of secrecy and intimidation. Ronald Ziegler denied the charges, noting a closed atmosphere. Helen Thomas Dan Rather and Hugh Sidey highlighted leaks and press pressure as the incident drew FBI scrutiny of Daniel Schorr.
City Solicitor Frederick F. Waugh proposed a settlement to Stokely-Van Camp Inc to recover water charges not billed due to a meter-reading error at the North West Street plant. The error dates to 1962 with back bills potentially limited to six years, about $25,000, and provisions hinge on whether back billing starts 1970 or 1971. Stokely’s counsel has been ill, delaying response.
