A car driven by Roy Phillips, 48, of Bellevue, crashed through a detour barricade at 4 30 a.m. on Route 250 south of Norwalk. He failed to see signs and blamed a car ahead. he was cited for speed in excess of conditions.
Mrs Rosemary Kistler of Meadville Pennsylvania endured two Viet Nam related losses in close succession. Army Lt Bernard Kistler delivered the fatal news of Lt William Reach while she was pregnant with William Jr. then she married Kistler who died a short time after in Viet Nam.
Variable cloudiness through night with little temperature change high 40s. Tonight colder with low 18 to 25. Sunday partly cloudy and cool. Marriage applications list Archie C King and Dorothy E Robson both Greenwich, and Robert G Eastman and Roberta K Colvert of Greenwich. Births report a girl to Mr and Mrs David Graves of Milan Avenue and a boy to Mr and Mrs Orchie Case of New London RD2. Death notices for Lawrence L Flory age 57 and Lorenzo A Lynn age 83.
Astronauts James Lovell and Edwin Aldrin steered Gemini 12 through a total solar eclipse at 7:45 a.m. EST and took the first space eclipse photos. They attempted to image the moon's 52 mile shadow over the eastern Pacific but failed, reporting precise alignment yet no shadow image. The mission began with a flawless launch and included a delicate corridor maneuver near the Galapagos Islands before a two hour standby.
Tucker chosen as general chairman of Norwalk Sesquicentennial events to mark the 150th anniversary of Norwalk’s first permanent house. Five day celebration tentatively set for June 30 to July 4 featuring a pageant, dances, parades, and sports with Harlem Globetrotters and other attractions. Committees named for funds, publicity, hospitality, and program divisions. Kenneth Conway succeeds his father on the committee.
Communist gunners claim five US aircraft downed including four jets and a propeller plane near North Viet Nam and three helicopters over South Viet Nam with crews killed or captured. Hanoi reported pilots captured while overall north losses rise to 427 planes.
Norwalk residents on Norwood Avenue between Hawthorne and Sinclair Streets may see rusty water late Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning. Morley Price city service director says the rust is from a new water line being started between Benedict and Norwood Avenues causing a reverse flow. Run the tap a few minutes to clear the discoloration. the water is not dangerous.
Deputy Coroner Dr. John Blackwood ruled the death of August Hoge of 156 N Buckeye Bellevue as self inflicted. A 32 caliber revolver was used and the bullet entered his head. The Foos Funeral Home will handle arrangements with a funeral set for 1 p.m. Monday. Hoge is survived by his wife a married son and a step daughter.
Norwalk School District leaders including Dr. S. R. Corbin urged residents to attend a 4:30 p.m. Monday meeting at the school administration building on North Hester Street to decide on next steps after the five mill levy was defeated. A December special election may be considered.
Five year old David Allen was struck by a car near Pleasant Street School but was not injured. Joanne Schaffer said she was backing from the driveway when the boy stepped in back of the auto. The boy gave his name as David Scott Allen and reported no injuries.
The Norwalk Chamber of Commerce announced six new board members Friday, two from each category. Industrial reps are Ed Arlin of Norwalk Thermostat and Ed Still of Fanny Farmer. Service and professional reps are Anthony Petrosino and Richard Mutz. Retail reps are Ed Fessenden of Jacqueline Shop and Robert Smetzer of White's Roofing. A board meeting to elect officers is set for Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the new Chamber office on Seminary Street.
