George C. Wallace said he may resume Alabama law practice while keeping open a 1972 presidential run if national trends favor him. He spoke relaxed at a news conference after losing but claiming success with five Southern states.
Monroeville Board of Education will relaunch the seven mill levy defeated by 19 votes with a special election on December 10. The measure requires about 70 percent local budget support and will cost $2,000 from operating funds. The board called the cost regrettable but necessary. A separate fire tragedy in Norwalk left 12 year old Lataniya Lynn Craig dead and infant Antonio Craig with burns after a house fire.
Mrs. Craig and her two youngest children were in the living room when a fire broke out at their home on Jefferson Street. Lataniya, 2, and Alicia, 4, survived with the mother receiving facial burns. Firemen and neighbors praised heroism as Patrolman Striker rescued Lataniya and the Salvation Army organized clothing aid for the family. The origin is undetermined, the house owned by Anna Lee Daniel, and funeral arrangements are pending.
Portland reports Robert W. Packwood, 36, withheld a victory statement as absentee ballots were counted. The Republican state representative appears to end Wayne Morse’s volatile Senate career, Morse long seen as a maverick of the upper chamber.
Chicago Mayor Daley refused to concede Illinois 26 electoral votes to Nixon saying mistakes could exist after ballots arrived late from Cicero and Berwyn townships. He spoke after a news conference noting 12 hour late mail in heavily Republican suburbs.
Governor Rhodes announced that Ohioans approved a constitutional amendment to issue bonds for highway construction and capital improvements. Voters rejected a separate measure granting real estate tax exemption to homeowners 65 and over. a legislative wording change could extend the exemption to all resident homeowners.
In Ohio multiple districts face shutdowns due to funds while others plan reopenings after the vote. Youngstown again rejects an operating levy causing schools to close from late November to January. Deshler residents note a teen Methodist minister's daughter, Vicki Lynne Cole, held a Nixon support sign during his Ohio tour. Nixon later recalls the sign in his victory address.
Cloudy and cool conditions expected across Northwest and Northeast Ohio with rain today and tonight. Highs in the 40s and lows near 40, plus windy cool Friday with intermittent rain mixing with snow. Robert Finch Gov. George Romney Gov. John Volpe Gov. John Chafee and others in line for attorney general commerce and health posts with advisers like Charles Rhyne and Evelle Younger.
President elect Richard Nixon spent time with a small group of advisers in Florida for a victory vacation in Key Biscayne. He plans to form an administration after three days and fill 11 Cabinet posts, with decisions before inauguration seen as crucial.
UPI reports Hubert H. Humphrey, running on two party labels in Alabama, could hold a national popular vote edge over Richard M. Nixon based on NES figures. With 94 percent of precincts, Humphrey shows 29,677,152 votes (43 percent), Nixon 29,726,403 (43 percent), Wallace 9,291,807 (14 percent), and a second Humphrey Alabama line at 53,120. totaling both Humphrey tallies would yield 29,730,272, a 3,869 vote lead.
