Mayor elect Frank L. Rizzo said he will appoint his younger brother Joseph Rizzo to be fire commissioner. Joseph, 47, is a battalion chief and would earn a $27,000 salary pending city council approval.
Look Magazine offered to settle a $12.5 million libel suit against Mayor Joseph L. Alioto with a demand for about $100,000. Alioto's attorney said the offer received a strongly affirmative reply but Look declined to meet the sum.
Moscow reports the Minsk-22 computer calculated earths air cover weighs 5 quadrillion 157 trillion tons. Tass notes the figure aids research in cosmonautics space geodesy and gravimetry.
At the Vatican the third International Synod of Bishops voted down nearly all sections of a key document addressing war hunger torture and injustice. Only a four paragraph piece asserting a religious spirit as the world's hope was approved.
