Supt Ferres warns red ink could force district closing next year without a five mill operating levy. The 1978 budget stands at 1 466341 with a 149075 deficit projected. A two year two mill levy would raise about 120000 annually to cover ongoing costs.

The Labor Department reports inflation erased a typical pay raise for full time workers in the year to May. Average weekly earnings rose 6.9 percent to 212 dollars, but consumer prices climbed 6.7 percent, wiping out real gains. Men earned 253 dollars weekly, women 156 dollars, a 62 percent ratio.

Hearing Tonight On Piggyback Tax

A public hearing on a half percent piggyback sales tax for Huron County will be held at 7 tonight in the Huron County Administration Building Norwalk. The hearing is the first formal step toward a tax by resolution without voter approval. A second hearing is set for 2 p.m. Monday in the basement conference room. The plan aims to cover a projected 1978 deficit of 225000 to 350000 while raising about 500000 a year, with a likely levy as early as February 1 1978 if approved.
