Buses Stoned as Painesville Strike Shuts District
United Press International reports rocks were hurled at buses as they left garages in the strikebound Painesville Township school district. Deputies escorted buses for pickups of students taught by substitutes. About 180 teachers began a strike on Sept 27 over a contract dispute. The board moved to start terminating struck teachers' contracts. A judge dissolved a negotiation order and had ordered workers back to duty, which they ignored. Similar strikes continued in Logan and at the Oberlin vocational school. Logan negotiators pressed talks with the district while teachers vowed to stay off the job.
