Public Hearing Today Over Fired Norwalk High Teacher
A public hearing on the dismissal of mathematics teacher Barbara Hart of Norwalk High reconvened at 1 p.m. in the Huron County Administration Building. Hart, a first year teacher, was dismissed last January for gross inefficiency and classroom discipline issues. Her bid to challenge the firing led to a March hearing where subpoenas for student and faculty records were challenged by Norwalk Board of Education attorney Dean Jollay. Referee Roy L. Benson ruled to allow the subpoenas to stand, with the hearing set to reconvene April 19 amid parental resistance to using discipline records.

Norwalk Motorists Rush to Meet Auto Tag Deadline
Norwalk motorists faced a midnight deadline to renew 1978 license plate stickers. Chief Lawrence Hilson warned cars with expired plates on streets will be towed at owners’ expense, and last year’s stickers could lead to arrest. More than 25 people waited at 9:30 a.m. at the Norwalk License Bureau on West Seminary Street. Deputy Registrar Urban Livengood cited improved flow from presale in March and staff addition Margaret Wynkoop. Early registration carried no fee here, though the state may charge up to 1.50 for 1979 stickers.

Incumbent challenged in Huron County primary for commissioner
In the June 6 primary for Huron County Commissioner two party races unfold. Democratic incumbent Maurice Smith of New London faces Willard Fire Chief John Yacob, while Republican contractor John Baltes faces farmer Joseph Sherman. Smith, seeking a third term, touts fiscal restraint and sewer projects, while Yacob pushes centralizing services and a county park plan. Baltes leverages decades in highway contracting as his qualification, with no clear single issue besides governance experience.
