UPI reports Joe Frazier singer and boxing champion failed to reach Vienna for a Stadthalle show after disappearing in Berlin amid a small European tour crowd. Two Berlin-bound planes arrived without him as officials awaited his arrival.
Norwalk Junior High industrial arts teacher Richard Vogt was named the first Teacher of the Year by the Norwalk Education Association. He received an engraved silver cup from John Trier at the dinner, with committee members Catherine Rogers and Carolyn Zupanic noting Vogt's all around teaching skill and classroom rapport. Vogt, a Belmont County native, began teaching in 1953 after graduating from Ohio University.
Milan Steel and Construction vice president Donald G. Keith 35 of Greenwich sustained critical injuries after his Milan Co car collided with a semi at the Ohio 601 and US 20 intersection east of Norwalk. Truck driver Stanley Campbell 45 of Chicago and passenger Clifford Statler 35 of Manteno were treated and released. Police say Keith ran a stop sign and the car burst into flames before responders quelled the blaze.
Variable cloudiness with showers or thundershowers today and cooler tonight. Highs mid to upper 60s, lows upper 40s to 50s, Wednesday highs around 60. 40 percent today then 20 percent tonight and Wednesday. Norwalk high 80 low 58 with 7 am humidity 38 percent rising to 75 by evening. Births include Leroy Brimmer Sandusky son and Larry Gipson Monroeville son. Deaths: Rachel A. Mink 59 Willard.
Sporadic violence among black and white airmen at Travis Air Force Base escalated into a $40,000 fire at the bachelor officers quarters. Fireman James T. Morsberger died while fighting the blaze. At least 122 airmen were arrested as base security sealed the installation and newsmen were barred.
Service Director Herbert Krogh plans to ask the city council to criminalize verbally abusing a police officer on duty. He seeks penalties up to six months in jail or a $500 fine or both, following an article in The Reflector about Norfolk penalties for calling a policeman a pig. He discussed the idea with Mayor Harold Finch who backs similar action locally.
City officials outlined a plan to spend about 1 million to retool the electrical system for Ohio Edison power over 242 years. Service Director Herbert Krogh spoke at a Monday night meeting, detailing costs to be incurred whether the municipal plant remains or is phased out.
