Enrollment declines as costs surge in public schools
Public school enrollment fell in 36 states from 1971 to 1976 while operating costs rose across all 50 states. Nationwide enrollment slipped 2.3 percent, with costs up 56 percent. Alabama led cost increases at 95.2 percent, while Kansas, North Dakota and Iowa saw large enrollment drops. The National Institute of Education calls for careful planning to balance shrinking enrollments with rising expenses and notes mixed impacts on quality.
