Defense lawyers said they would appeal the five year prison term and $2000 fine given to H. Rap Brown, SNCC chairman, on the second count after a racially mixed jury convicted him in federal court. The case centers on a controversial firearm charge.

A New York Airways twin rotor helicopter disintegrated in flight and crashed into a cow corral near Paramount California killing all 23 aboard. FAA investigators collected debris over a half mile area to determine the cause.

A gray mare owned by Robert Smetzer escaped from a barn at his mother-in-law’s home on Route 20. Police chased the animal from 7 30 am near McCoy's Sales and Service to Pleasant Street area, finally capturing it at the end of Lais Avenue after a two hour pursuit involving reinforcements.
Reagan drew about 2 000 in Cleveland for a rush hour rally at Public Square and raised at least 42 400 for the Republican Party, part of a four day five state swing that added 800 000 to the treasury. He is not an active candidate but would accept a draft if one came.
A 1964 Volkswagen found in a Huron County barn is tied to a 1966 turquoise Ford Mustang theft from a North Monroeville home. Ohio plates and prison attire clues suggest a link to an escapee’s movements. Frank E Rohr of Chelsea searched for the recovered vehicle after it was reported by Clarence Martin. Authorities note the Ohio plates were not listed as stolen.
