Mary Guess of Vincennes Manor Chicago memorably marks her 115th birthday with a cake cutting. Born in Yazoo City Mississippi four years before the Civil War she still sews washes irons and keeps her room tidy. She recalls hearing of Lincoln's assassination at age 11 in 1865 and shared memories from a long life.

Barge Fire Threatens $10 Million Mississippi Bridge

A barge carrying 847000 gallons of gasoline burned against a railroad bridge on the Mississippi River at Quincy Illinois. Four men were missing presumed dead. Dragging operations were to begin upstream at La Grange Missouri where two barges floated after a pumping barge exploded during unloading.

Evans seeks new trial in Glenville murder case

Black Nationalist leader Fred Evans whose trial ended with seven counts of first degree murder of three policemen and a civilian faces a new trial bid by his attorneys who allege blacks were excluded from the jury. Evans, 37, was sentenced to die in the electric chair on September 22.

Rhodes signs four Ohio laws to take effect Aug 11

Governor James A. Rhodes enacted four measures from the General Assembly. The laws designate Ohio 72 as the Simon Kenton Trace Highway, require measles immunizations for schoolchildren, extend small claims trial deadlines from 20 to 30 days, and revise conservancy district powers on instrument acknowledgment official plans and water sales.

Gasoline Truck Crash in Flint Kills Five

Clifford Walters watched a gasoline truck overturn after a car pulled in front of it at an intersection. The crash spilled 11,000 gallons of gasoline, ignited a fire, and killed five people. Victims were identified only tentatively due to burn severity.
