LBJ signs rent bill and push on education funds

President Johnson signed a 2.8 billion rent subsidy bill to begin the program and urged Congress to restore funds for the new teacher corps by July 1. Johnson honors wounded veterans at Walter Reed visit

President Johnson toured Walter Reed Army Medical Center and awarded Purple Heart medals to four men, praising their service and thanking them for their sacrifices. He was joined by his daughter Luci and met with former President Eisenhower and Senate GOP Leader Dirksen during the visit.

Saxbe calls 1966 election the most important in 50 years

Ohio Attorney General William B. Saxbe visited Norwalk on a campaign swing citing the 1966 election as the most important in half a century. He warned a Democratic victory could derail reapportionment and GOP gains, urged pay and training boosts for police, and stressed party teamwork.

Step Up Possible In Viet Nam Air War

UPI reports Red China claims U S jets shot down a Chinese plane and Washington warns North Viet Nam may have its three Hanoi area jet airfields bombed. Officials say bombing those bases could occur if U S planes suffer MIG attacks, marking a potential major escalation. Radio Peking meanwhile accuses U S jets of violating Chinese airspace.

New London Wins Federal Funds for Remedial Program

The New London School Board approved 17 915 dollars in Title I funds for a remedial reading and mathematics program serving about 120 students from grades 1 through 8. The program runs six weeks, five days a week, three hours daily. A separate Title II motion approved 3 167 dollars for elementary library books and a high school material center, with book selection overseen by the public librarian.

Merger of Railroads Hailed by Stockholders

Officials of the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad hailed the merger with the Norfolk and Western Railway after 99.3 percent of C&O shares voted in favor at Cleveland and Roanoke stockholders approving 7 to 1. The merger goes to the Interstate Commerce Commission for approval. Walter J. Tuohy died of a heart attack before addressing the meeting.

Carpenters Reach Tentative Contract Across Nine Counties

Carpenters and builders in a nine county area reached a tentative labor contract during a session at the Elks Country Club. A C Morley said the agreement is a compromise and terms will be announced within ten days. The contract replaces the May 31 expire date and involves the Lake Erie District Council and Buckeye Contractors Association along with related groups in Ashland Crawford Erie Huron Lorain Richland Ottawa Sandusky and Seneca counties.
