Like Old Times Horses We Have Known in Huron County
Early settlers came by wagon or oxen, horses were scarce and costly. Tax records valued horses at forty dollars in 1826, while river ferry fees matched oxen. Local ads introduced breeding stock, notable horses auctioned at the American Hotel in Norwalk, including Bark Mill, Berkshire, Polly Stokes and Rat Catcher. Henry Wheeler Shaw, later Josh Billings, bought Polly Stokes, linking horse trade to local humorist lore. Western horses arrived by boxcar, often leaving town the same night, while memorable mares like Lady Wheelwright drew crowds at the county fair and perished in village lore.
