Area students earn commendations in national safety poster contest
Seven area students received commendation awards, eleven earned merit citations, and four teachers won certificates of appreciation as nearly 60 posters from the area were entered. May is designated for health awareness as the Firelands Red Cross offers free blood pressure screenings May 17-18 from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Huron County Administration Building Norwalk. Lions Tom Heydinger and Don Burtchin lead a Broom and Bulb sale for Norwalk Lions Club with proceeds aiding club projects and blind and sight saving activities.

Parachutist Killed in Xenia Jump at Green County Center
Roger W. Varner 20 of Akron died during a parachute jump at Green County Sports Parachute Center near Xenia Township. Varner and three others formed a star in the air from 7,500 feet, then failed to open both chutes after separating at 3,000 feet. He crashed near Foust Road and Monroe Siding road and was pronounced dead. A previous jumper, 25 in Cincinnati, died at the center about a year earlier.

Three Vehicle Crash at Ohio 13 and U S 224 Junction
A 79 year old Pennsylvania man, Bruce Shindle of Greencastle, was cited for failure to obey a red light after his vehicle hit a truck, a car and a flower shop building at the Ohio 13 U S 224 junction. A passenger suffered a hurt, and another driver was cited for failure to yield after a separate back into a driveway collision on Miller Road.

Ambulances Make 99 Runs in Norwalk April
Norwalk ambulances logged 99 runs in April with 54 emergencies. Twenty city emergency calls and 15 outside the city, 32 inside and four outside for transport of invalids, plus nine miscellaneous trips. Calls totaled 73 to Norwalk locations, seven to Ridgefield Township, and three each to Norwalk and Bronson townships, bringing 1976 year total to 363.
