United Rubber Workers members earning about 220 a week begin 35 weekly strike pay on Wednesday. URW spokesman warned they will stay out even without money. About 70,000 URW members walk picket lines at Firestone Goodyear B F Goodrich and Uniroyal after a midnight April 20 strike over a new contract.
Washington. Nicholas Johnson former FCC commissioner told a New Orleans Electronics Industry Show seminar that citizen band radios could reduce profits for radio television and even telephones and make roadside phones nearly obsolete for travelers.
Weather clears with cold tonight and frost risk. Lows mid 30s, sunny and warmer Tuesday with highs near 60. 10 percent precip. Northwestern wind 10 to 15 mph. Marriage license applications listed for multiple couples in Norwalk. Births and deaths for local residents, including ages and locations.
UPI reports Industry Week says total taxes reached 411.3 billion dollars equal to 53.9 percent of wages. Federal taxes were 262.2 billion and state local taxes 149.1 billion. Per capita tax bill averaged 1 941 dollars.
Ohio lawmakers pass a bill requiring no smoking sections in public rooms of government buildings awaiting Gov. Rhodes signature. Local officials in Huron County say plans are not yet formed while Norwalk’s mayor requests more information before commenting.
The Norwalk Instrumental Music Parents Association will hold its annual banquet at 6 30 PM tonight at the junior high reflecting a community event honoring students and volunteers.
Robert Rattray, 26, reported to King County jail for a two hour sentence intended to teach prison misery. He faced fingerprinting, a skin search, delousing, and a meal in A-1 tank before finishing the remaining hours. He criticized the publicity surrounding the case and questioned the sentence’s effectiveness.
Secretary of State Kissinger toured Kenya’s game reserve after a six nation African tour. He viewed thousands of buffalo zebra and giraffe and a lion kill during a two hour open jeep drive. Journalists quipped about lions on his plane as troops closed park roads for security.
CAMBRIDGE OHIO UPI congressional reporter Donald Lambro urges Washington reporters to scrutinize federal programs for waste and inefficiency. He argues media rarely questions if programs benefit the public and cites billions wasted on unnecessary or extravagant federal initiatives. A panel on Women On The Sports Pages followed during the editors meeting with sports editors from several Ohio papers.
Indiana Senator Birch Bayh endorsed Jimmy Carter at an airport news conference on the eve of the Indiana primary. Bayh, who left the race in March, cited shared concerns on national issues after conversations with Carter. Carter planned Gary and Fort Wayne appearances and discussed Vietnam era deserters in a separate Sunday briefing.
In Lucasville Ohio striking guards again blocked entrances to the Southern Ohio Correctional facility. A hunger strike by inmates appeared to have ended. The prison runs on a holiday schedule with few guards on duty and limited visitor access.
Frank Sinatra’s staff in Chicago criticized tabloid reports claiming an extravagant suite at the Ambassador East Hotel, private bar, and Italian snacks during his 18 day Midwest stay. Secretary Dorothy Uhlemann and press aide Lee Solters said reporters fabricate stories and pretend to be novelists.
