Ohio school levy votes return in scattered primary

Voters in at least 127 districts where tax levies failed are set to reconsider on Tuesday in a statewide primary with no statewide issues or candidates. Officials expect only 20 to 30 percent turnout in the off year vote.

In Norwalk 4,665 registered voters face a competitive mayoral race with three Republican hopefuls and a two-way Democratic contest, plus a charter commission vote and 16 precincts. Bellevue sees five Democrats and two Republicans vying for mayor, with Willard district bond and several district tax levies on ballots.

Militant antiwar demonstrators failed to shut down the government as police backed by Army troops and Marines used tear gas and arrests in the thousands. Man Slugs Deputy In Escape Attempt

A prisoner being returned to the Huron County Jail slugged Lt. Leslie Harper and fled on foot before being recaptured at his parents’ West Elm Street home. William H. Kuhlman, 1962 W. Elm Sr., had been sentenced to a one to 15 year term in the Ohio Reformatory and was returned to the jail by 10 45. Norwalk police aided in the arrest. Harper was not seriously hurt.

Norwalk Man Seriously Injured In Rural Ohio Crash

Charles Bartow, 63, of Norwalk is in serious condition at Riverside Methodist Hospital after a two-vehicle crash near Shelby at 9 15 a m. His truck was struck by Clyde Justice, 43, of Plymouth, as Bartow attempted to cross Route 96 at Plymouth Spring Mill Road. Justice was treated at Shelby hospital. no citations were issued.
