Fire damages baled jute at Janesville plant

Sparks from a torn electrical conduit at Janesville Products Inc set off a fire in baled jute. Fire Chief Elmer McGuckin said a forklift driver attempted to move a bale, tearing the conduit and triggering the blaze that consumed most of the central east storage area. Eleven firemen fought the flames after a 1:30 p.m. alarm. The plant suffered roof damage to gain access, but the structure remained intact. The jute, highly flammable, caused extensive involvement of bales in the area.
